Moving to Lambeth?

Lambeth is an area within the London Borough of the same name which is really a narrow strip of land with several centres of population including Clapham , Brixton, West Norwood to name a few. The area referred to as Lambeth is often referred to now as Waterloo (or sometimes Southbank), named after the railway station which separates the area from the River Thames. Lambeth, as we’ll continue to call it is very handily located near the river and is served well by public transport. Waterloo underground station is an extremely busy interchange handling several different lines and in addition the main railway station is a major over ground for trains in and out of London, particularly serving the South West. As you’d expect from such a major transport hub, buses are freely available. People living in Vauxhall etc would say that they lived in South Lambeth and that is very much more residential than what is called North Lambeth, the area around Waterloo.

The ancient settlement of Lambeth Marsh was more or less opposite the Palace of Westminster and was most likely a home for boatmen on the River Thames at that time. This parish at that time extended a long way down the river in those days and took in areas we now know as Vauxhall and Kennington, and actually formed part of Surrey until the creation of the County of London in 1889. Later in 1965, the area was absorbed into the London Borough of Lambeth incorporating districts further south and west of Lambeth itself.

The Lambeth of today however is without doubt one of the most rapidly developing parts of London in every way, particularly in cultural terms, there having been huge forward steps taken in the building of theatres, concert halls not to mention centres of education. The area is home to the London Eye , one of London’s most popular visitor attractions, the redeveloped County Hall buildings and the large and influential South Bank Arts centre housing theatres( notably the Royal Festival Hall), cinemas and restaurant facilities in a modern riverside location. Also close at hand as if that wasn’t enough there is the vast art presence of Tate Modern and the charm of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in its new home by the river.

Shopping in the area is interesting, and somewhat disjointed. Lower Marsh, really the site of old Lambeth Village proper and very near the London Eye is well known for its market and there are some more recognised retail outlets in the area too. Other shopping pockets are spread around the whole South Bank area but there wouldn’t be any one area of focus as such.

Eating out in Lambeth is a difficult process as there is so much choice. Maybe try Canteen, part of the Royal Festival Hall, very good and very British or maybe some French fare at Chez Gerard on Belvedere Road, mighty impressive.

Two people associated with Lambeth are Charlie Chaplin who was born there and actor Kevin Spacey who now lives there.
