Moving to Lewisham?
Lewisham is a town in South East London forming part of the London Borough of the same name and
located around 3 miles from Central London. Its nearest neighbours are the London Boroughs of
Bromley, Southwark and Greenwich. It is fairly well connected too being at the origin of the
Docklands Light Railway and also Lewisham Station is located at the branch of lines to Hayes and
Dartford. Additionally the East London Line terminates at nearby New Cross and a new extension
to be called the East London Railway will service other centres in the area. By road it is also
accessible as the South Central A205 passes through the middle of the Borough carrying with it
many London Bus Routes.
Lewisham’s history dates back probably to pre-Saxon times and its name means loosely ‘house
among the meadows’. Real development didn’t really occur until the mid 17th Century when the
then vicar of Lewisham was responsible for the building of charity housing (Almshouses) for
its inhabitants and also a grammar school. The original village was located originally further
south of its current location and it only moved North with the coming of the railway line to
Dartford in 1849, with accompanying commuter type housing also appearing. The village was
originally considered to be part of Kent until absorption into Greater London occurred
in 1965.
Modern Lewisham is characterised by a particularly long high street, the scene of a direct bomb
strike during World War II and killing 300 people. This devastated the town centre as one would
expect and it took until the mid 1950’s to restore it. Near the High Street is the Lewisham
Shopping Centre which houses chain stores, restaurants etc and has seen a rise in footfall since
the arrival of the Docklands Light Railway. It is also home to a Sainsbury’s store which,
although small by modern standards was once the largest supermarket in Europe! Development
has continued (a lot more is planned also) in the area and the Northern end of the street was
pedestrianised in 1994, and playing host to a street market open on a daily basis. Lewisham’s
only really truly Commercial building is tower once owned by Citibank until they moved their
base to Canary Wharf.
Lewisham has a reasonable range of restaurants but the trend would be more towards the well
known chains rather than anything really individual. For that, head to nearby Blackheath, also
within the Borough where you’ll find a nice selection, notably Zerodegrees a modern
micro-brewery offering great food and atmosphere or stay in Lewisham itself and pay Maggie’s
Restaurant a visit. It has been trading for twenty years and serves food in very relaxed and
functional surroundings.
Famous people often associated with Lewisham include singer and guitar pioneer Jimmi Hendrix
and actor Jude Law among many others
Historical Place of interest: the plaque on the high street commemorating the World War II bombing.
