Mayfair is a highly exclusive and desirable district located within Central London and forming
part of The London Borough of Westminster. It is a mile or less from Central London and is
bordered by Hyde Park, Green Park and Oxford Street. Getting there is easy with London
Underground stations surrounding the area at Bond Street, Green Park, Hyde Park Corner and
Marble Arch. Mainline train Station Victoria is reasonably close and London Bus routes are
numerous, this being the hub of all activity.
The name Mayfair is derived from the fortnight long May Fair which took place on the site
that is now Shepherd Market, until it moved elsewhere. Much of Mayfair was developed during the
17th and 18th Centuries as fashionable living quarters for many landlords, the best known
being the Grosvenor family, after whom streets and squares are named. The district nowadays is
mainly commercial with many of the large houses of that period now tastefully converted into
office space. Some residential areas do remain however and the prices rate among the highest
anywhere in London and indeed the World. The neighbourhood is also home to the highest
concentration of high quality hotels in London also, as seen on the board-game Monopoly where
an untimely visit will cost you dearly!
Shopping in Mayfair is simply peerless with some of London’s best known areas such as Savile Row,
home of bespoke tailoring and Bond Street, famous for all manner of high quality apparel and
antique dealerships being within easy walking distance. There are other pockets of great
shopping areas too, notably at Burlington Arcade and Shepherds Market which are both home to
smaller, boutique style shops as well as cafes and restaurants galore. Also worth bearing in
mind is the close proximity of Oxford and Regent Streets where the absolute best of London
shopping is available on an enormous scale.
Eating and drinking in the Mayfair area is quite simply top-drawer, much like every other
aspect of this incredible neighbourhood and there are many famous names. Less well known but
simply delightful is Cecconi’s, an Italian Restaurant on Burlington gardens designed in the
style of 1920’s Venice. Its food is amazing and the whole place just oozes class, but at a
price. Also try Greig’s Grill Restaurant off Berkeley square, it’s one of London’s longest
surviving eateries and reputedly home to the best steak anywhere in London. For less formal
activity, Shepherds Market has all- manner of smaller and cheaper places to eat and drink but
still in an area of great atmosphere and character.
