Moving to Mile End?
Mile End is an area of East London, situated around three and a half miles east of Central London,
within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is hard to describe its precise boundaries as many
of these East End areas like Bow and Stepney Green run into each-other giving the neighbourhoods
no firm identity. It’s quite easy to get too as well with London Underground Services at nearby
Bow Road, Stepney Green and Mile End itself, all part of the District Line on its route from
London out to Essex. Bus services are readily available as are main road links in and out of
Central London, the A12 and the A13 being good road arteries.
Mile End inherited its current name from a milestone which marked the boundary one mile East
of Aldgate, the edge of the City Of London. Although the marker was originally located nearer
Stepney Green, it gave the name to what we now recognise as Mile End, an area about one mile
east of that point and around what is now Mile End underground station. The main development of
this area took place during the Georgian era with much of the building appearing along Bow Road.
During the 20th Century Mile End was heavily bombed during World War II and was the first
area in London to receive a direct hit by a V1 flying bomb, when one impacted the railway
bridge on nearby Grove road, killing thirty civilians and rendering a further two hundred
homeless. The surrounding area was derelict for many years until being cleared to create
what is now known as Mile End Park.
Modern Mile End, really quite a small centre, is mainly still focused on Bow Road and
Mile End Road where acceptable convenience type shopping is available. Hardly exciting by
any standards but just about acceptable, with Waterstones booksellers being the best known
on Mile End Road .Don’t despair however; better shopping areas are relatively accessible
via a short trip by underground.
Similarly eating and drinking in Mile End will not set the pulse racing , as what’s on
offer is largely small and of just standard quality. The Afghan Persian Restaurant on
Midlothian road does at least offer something different from normal places and is very
authentic whereas for real East End tradition try G.Kelly on Roman Road for well known local
dishes such as eels and pies...There are also a few good bars near the Tube station and a very
good comedy club called Jongleurs also.
Mile End is also home to the Queen Mary Campus of the University Of London as well as The
London School of Medicine and Dentistry and their associated student campus. An unusual landmark
in the area is the well known ‘Green Bridge’, opened in 2000, a structure which allows Mile End
Park to cross the main road, and providing shop and restaurant space below.
Famous people from Mile End include Jack the Ripper, who operated in the area and in stark
contrast, famous page 3 model Samantha Fox is from the area too!
Historical Place of Interest: The Ragged School museum, a museum dedicated to Victorian children.
