Moving to Newham?
Located around three miles East of Central London in the heart of the East End, the London
Borough of Newham sits just north of the River Thames and represents one of the most diverse
ethnic populations in the entire country. It consists of a number of centres of population
including Beckton, Canning Town and Stratford among several others not least East and West Ham.
There numerous transport options both on the DLR( including to City Airport) which services
several stops within the Borough, London Underground Services( District and Hammersmith and
City Lines) , over- ground train services( a new International station at Stratford is due in
2009) and a multitude of bus routes, in and out of Central London and beyond. The main A13
passes through much of the Borough offering excellent East to West road travel and finally the
presence of nearby City Airport completes the full-house of transport connectivity.
This large London Borough was formed as a result of the merging boroughs of West and East
Ham, which duly occurred in 1965. At this time also, North Woolwich became part of the new
Borough along with a small area west of the River Roding, previously part of the Borough of
Barking. The name Newham therefore is an entirely new name for this area and has no
previous origins.
As mentioned there are several main residential and commercial areas within the Borough
and each offer s its own benefits. Stratford for example is fairly well developed and when it
gets its new Railway station upgrade that trend is likely to continue, particularly with the
Olympics of 2012 in mind. Here there are a few chain stores, independents and large shopping
centre. Additionally there are supermarkets and a cinema very near the town centre making the
town actually very well serviced with facilities. Different in feel but no less important is
Green Street and Queens Market near West Ham. The former is the most significant Asian
shopping area anywhere in London offering hundreds of boutiques selling fabric and jewellery
whereas Queens Market concentrates on food, specifically fruit, vegetables and all kinds of
herbs and spices. Another different shopping option but still within the Borough is
Gallions Reach which opened in 2003, an out-of-town shopping area located in Beckton, offering
a huge number of chain stores, restaurants all on one site with ample parking. With all that
you could argue pretty convincing case for Newham’s shopping credentials being as good as
most of London’s Boroughs, certainly more diverse.
From such a culturally diverse area you are going to get eating experiences that reflect
that. Devotees of African cuisine will love Tari’s on the Barking road in Canning Town,
offering excellent authentic Nigerian food at really affordable prices. For Greek food and a
great experience try Cypriana on Lea Bridge road, where you’d be forgiven for thinking you
were in Greece
Other facilities within the Borough include the Stratford Campus of the University of
East London, premiership football at West Ham Utd and of course the majority of the site
for the 2012 Olympics.
Notable people from the Borough include athlete Christine Uhuruogu and actress Honor
Blackman
