Moving to Paddington?
Paddington refers to an area of Central London formerly with a Borough
called itself, prior to being absorbed into the London Borough of Westminster
in 1965. Sharing boundaries with districts such as Marylebone, Maida Vale and
Hyde Park, Paddington is a neighbourhood lacking in a true residential
identity and very much has a feel of an area which has come about as a result
of the Station and the everything that goes with it.
It is however very well located with Paddington Station(designed by
Brunel)carrying both over –ground services to Oxford and other locations in
the South West and London Underground trains on several lines, offering great
access to all parts of central London. The site is also a historic one having
been the origin of The Great Western Railway. By road it is easily reached by
car and also by numerous London Bus routes, largely due to its important rail
status.
Historically part of Middlesex, references to ’Padington’ as it was called
date back as far as 1056 however it is best known in more recent years for
its Railway Station , St Mary’s Hospital and for Paddington Green Police
Station, one of London’s most important high-security Police locations.
While Paddington itself doesn’t offer a great deal itself to the visitor,
it is a pleasant place to live with lots of Victorian apartments and larger
townhouses. Its appeal lies with its location close to the railway station and
its proximity to other areas of West Central London. Edgware Road and other
areas are close enough that you would be advised to head out of Paddington
itself to enjoy the shopping pleasures of other areas because this area offers
little other than basic , run-of the mill shops and essential services.
There are, like around most stations some decent places to eat and drink
and this part of town is no different really. You may want to try Levantine on
London Street, a rather chic and sophisticated Middle Eastern restaurant which
serves a variety of mezze and grills. Also worth a visit is Frontline
Restaurant on nearby Norfolk place, which offers traditionally British
dishes with ingredients sourced from small local suppliers, a refreshing
approach.
Famous people associated with Paddington include Ainsley Harriot the celebrity
chef and actors Emma Thompson and Keifer Sutherland
