Moving to Pimlico?
Pimlico is a small and quiet area of Central London within the City Of
Westminster and is bordered vaguely by Victoria station in the North and the
River Thames in the South. It is rather desirable to say the least and is
serviced by its own station on London Underground services (Victoria Line)
and over ground and bus services are readily available at Victoria station
a short distance away.
The history of the area we now call Pimlico can be traced back to around
the 16th century when the manor of Ebury (Pimlico now has a street of that
name) was divided up and leased by the crown to servants or anyone else they
favoured. At some point in the 18th century it became known by its present
title although some called it South Belgravia until the early part of the
20th Century. By the 19th century the real development of Pimlico took place
largely due to a new demand for property in the West end and Thomas Cubitt
was commissioned to undertake the development, which he certainly did, laying
out the area in a series of grids composed mainly of white stucco terraces.
As a result the area became populated largely by the middle and upper classes
despite experiencing something of a decline during the 1890’s and coinciding
with the development of affordable housing projects called Peabody Estates.
Equally ambitious was Dolphin Square, a self-contained area of around 1200
self contained apartments. The area was renovated extensively recently to
incorporate a swimming pool, bar/restaurant and a shopping arcade, all with
views across the Thames
Following the Second World War many of the larger houses in Pimlico were
tastefully converted into flats and in some cases hotels. The land was then
sold by The Duke of Westminster in 1953 and later when Pimlico was attached
to the London Underground system in 1972, the area underwent fairly dramatic
regeneration giving the area an interesting mix of restaurants and fine
residences.
For antique and interior design shopping, look no further than the opulence
of Pimlico road itself where numerous similarly minded stores offer the very
best of interior furnishings and unusual fabrics for home use. There are many
antique dealers here and too many to take in on one visit, not just that but
an expert eye is advisable to spot the true gems these stores will doubtless
be showing. There are around seventy stores here in all and almost without
exception they are independently owned, a feature that is entirely in keeping
with the neighbourhood itself.
For a break, venture into one of the area’s fine restaurants such as Chimes
of Pimlico on Churton Street , a civilised British eatery or try Shepherds
instead, a cool and civilised pitch on Marsham Street and one particularly
popular with politicians. Neither will disappoint.
Famous Pimlico residents, and there are many include Lawrence Olivier and
designer Laura Ashley.
