Moving to Redbridge?
Redbridge is a town within the London Borough of the same name found around 9
miles North East of Central London and is technically Outer London. The
Borough is home to a number of large pockets of population of which
Ilford/Newbury Park, Wanstead and Gants Hill are the best known, though there
are many others. The Borough is well serviced by public transport in that
London Underground services passes through the Borough with Central line
stops on both the Hinault and Epping branches, including at Redbridge itself.
Over- ground trains as part of the Great Eastern mainline also pass through a
variety of stations including Ilford en-route to London Liverpool street. By
road the arterial route A12 passes through the Borough at Wanstead and other
parts of the Borough provide access to the A406 North Circular, which in turn
leads to the A13 and the northbound M11. London bus routes are readily
available throughout the Borough.
The name Redbridge was obtained most likely from a red brick bridge which
crossed the nearby River Roding until it was demolished in 1921. Like many
London Boroughs, Redbridge was formed as a result of amalgamation of others
(in this case Wanstead and Ilford) formerly part of Essex and becoming Greater
London in 1965. As far as centres of population, Ilford would be the main
focus, and it’s town centre is a busy area the Exchange shopping Centre as
well as many high street type stores, supermarkets and a host of bars and
restaurants. Wanstead is more of a residential neighbourhood, with the A12
passing through, although it does have a thriving main street too, with many
independent stores and some nice pubs. Redbridge’s town centre would not be
one of the more interesting in the Borough and in truth most of the other
larger commercial centres offer considerably more. Gants Hill is another well
known area within the Borough and again it is predominantly residential with
the odd sprinkling of retail shops, bars and restaurants.
Within the wider Borough of Redbridge there are however some good places
to eat and one that springs to mind readily is The Ark Fish Restaurant
reputed to be one of the best seafood places in all of London ,sourcing all
of its fish from London’s Billingsgate fish market. Also worth a look is the
Apollonia Greek restaurant in Redbridge itself, which while relatively new,
prides itself in good quality and rather authentic Greek cuisine.
Famous people from the Borough of Redbridge are numerous but multi-award
winning Actress Helen Mirren springs to mind as do TV Presenter Noel Edmunds
and boxer Nigel Benn
