Moving to Richmond?

Richmond is a delightful town located within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames around 8 miles from Central London and technically, given the way the River Thames bends, to its East. It is a town renowned for its Royal connections and has some delightful residential homes not to mention a thriving town centre. To get there by train you can travel by London Underground services as Richmond is the Western terminus of the District Line as well as the Western end of an over ground line to Stratford via London Waterloo. By road it can be accessed most easily via the A3 road out of central London, on which London Buses also have routes.

The history of the town is best picked up at the time when Richmond Palace was built in 1501 by Henry VII and thereafter several English Kings made the palace their home . The palace itself is sadly no longer the but the town it helped create has steadily grown to the extent of its current form while always retaining something of its regal charm, while commanding gorgeous views of the River Thames and all its associated boating activities. (Twickenham Rowing Club is based here).

Richmond today has a rather compact town centre, often with heavy traffic, focused around mainly George and Hill Streets, with some nice alleys in between. Shopping is very high class indeed with top names like House of Fraser mixed with a plethora of smaller designer boutiques. Unlike most modern towns Richmond has no custom-built indoor shopping mall and that is by and large something of a relief in a town of this kind. Nearby Kingston is another shopping option, there being indoor facilities but with no real drop in quality. There is also a weekly farmers market in the town selling produce from the surrounding area in the form of dairy products, meat and vegetables.

To eat in Richmond is a pleasure and the choice is varied, try Bacco and Vinoteca on Kew Road a really authentic Italian or alternatively go French at La Buvette on Church Walk, a delightful haunt, and occasionally one of celebrities. These are just two but Richmond has many more excellent restaurants and bars and that feature is one of its strengths.

Additionally and on a leisure front, Richmond is home to two professional theatres which receive large touring performances as well as three cinemas, all further enhancing the already excellent image of the town. Hardly surprisingly the list of famous people with Richmond associations is somewhat lengthy, however the naturalist David Attenborough and author Geoffrey Chaucer are a good start, along with Mick Jagger and one time wife Jerry Hall.

Historical Place of Interest: Richmond Theatre, from Victorian times but very tastefully restored in 1990
