Moving to Shoreditch?
Shoreditch is a fairly urbanised part of inner-city London, around 2.5 miles
North East of the centre, forming part of the London Borough of Hackney. The
area of Shoreditch, bordered to the north by Old street, is easily reached
currently from London Underground services at Liverpool Street and in fact
Shoreditch High Street station itself is currently under construction, which
will then offer a link to the neighbourhood as part of the East London line
extension, an over ground service There was an underground station here
previously in Shoreditch but it was closed in 2006. Mainline Over–ground
services are available at Liverpool street also and the region is well served
by London Buses.
The historic heart of Shoreditch is without doubt its High Street and
the nearby Shoreditch Church, which were defined by the boundaries of
Shoreditch parish. This was part of Middlesex until 1889 when it then
became the County of London and later part of the modern Borough of today,
the London Borough of Hackney. Although very much an inner-city location
Shoreditch in early years was very much a suburb on the edge of London.
Shoreditch High street itself actually formed part of the old Roman road
which ran through this area ; Ermine Street and now part of what is now
the A10. This suburb was an attractive location for early theatres,
particularly in Tudor Times, The Theatre on Curtain Road was a place
of performance of Shakespeare even, prior to his departure to The Globe
in Southwark when the lease expired. The 17th Century saw weavers of
silk move to the area quickly establishing a small textile industry
only to decline in the 19th century, plunging the area into a mire of
drinking and prostitution.
Things are much better now and Shoreditch is a thriving, trendy even,
inner-city area popular with creative types seeking good property value, much
like it’s close neighbour Hoxton also. Curtain Road and Old Street offer a
great selection of pubs and clubs to rival the West End, but now Art
Galleries, media related businesses and the building of Hackney Community
College are transforming the area. Shoreditch High Street still has traces of
its older past but the general upward trend of renovation is moving throughout
the area and only a few pockets of the north and east could be said to be
still requiring modernisation. Shopping in Shoreditch is quirky in places
and mixed with more recognisable names, and nearby Spittalfields Market
offers just that as well as new shops and several modern restaurant chains.
Speaking of restaurants this area has a large and diverse selection and a
good starting point would be Bacchus on Hoxton Street, it’s contemporary
and chic and serves delightful dishes in cool surroundings. Then try
Green and Red, a brilliant Mexican on Bethnal Green road, its free of the
usual clichés and quite simply delivers, give it a go.
Famous Shoreditch residents include William Shakespeare himself and
comedienne Barbara Windsor, what a contrast!
Historical Place of Interest: Shoreditch Church, the parish heart of the area.
