Moving to Soho?
Soho is a district located in the Western part of Central London within the
London Borough of Westminster. It isn’t a very big area covering a little
over one mile of a chunk of land bounded by Oxford Street, Regent Street,
Charing Cross Road and Leicester Square. Additionally, the section between
Soho and Leicester Square referred to now as Chinatown is also considered part
of the Soho district. Consequently it is very accessible particularly by London
Underground services with nearby stations at Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court
Road, Piccadilly Circus as well as Leicester Square and Covent Garden giving
easy access to the whole of London via a number of different lines.
London Buses are readily available by virtue of Soho’s very central
location.
Back in the 16th Century, the thriving area we now call Soho was just an
area of grazing land until King Henry VIII stepped in and took it over as a
park. Later that century the lease of the area ended up in the hands of
Richard Frith who started the area’s development in earnest. Despite attempts
to develop Soho to be an affluent neighbourhood comparable with its neighbours
largely failed and it was never the retreat for aristocrats that many other
areas became. By the mid 1800’s the situation had deteriorated markedly to
the extent that any respectable family had left, giving way to vice in the
form of prostitution and small theatres/ music venues not to mention numerous
drinking houses which became the haunt drunken poets and writers. Not a lot
changed during the first half of the 20th century until the area underwent a
period of much needed gentrification.
Nowadays Soho is a thriving, trendy area home to entertainment, commerce ,
industry and retail, not to mention still being a residential area too. It
has a very much ‘open all night ‘ feel , due to the huge amount of bars,
clubs and coffee shops which line the narrow streets. Berwick street is the
area renowned for record shops, there being several selling modern sounds
mixed with old material on vinyl. London’s’ Gay Village’ is on Old Compton
Street and many businesses profit from that angle in the area earning what is
nowadays called the ‘pink pound’ ! Also Soho retains much of its historical
connection with the music business which to the 1940’s particularly Club 11,
regarded as the focal point of jazz in the UK still, also there are also
many other venues hidden away in Soho catering for most genres of music. Off
Regent street and still within the district is Carnaby street a well known
and now modernised shopping area one famous for its 70’s and 80’s punk
pretences, but now it’s a popular pedestrianised precinct
As well as music, theatre is part of Soho’s raison d’être with several
companies connected with the UK film industry too having offices around Soho
Square. It’s truly a hive of activity and has moved away by and large from
its seedy image of old, although later at night some aspects of that can be
seen!
Eating and drinking in Soho is mandatory, given the huge choice that
abounds, Try Alastair Little on Frith Street, the owner, a key figure in
modern British cuisine and his restaurant is one of Soho’s gems. Also on
Frith Street, head to Barrafina for some of the best Tapas in London.
Delicious!
Hundreds of famous people have passed through Soho over the years but
Karl Marx and Mozart stand out as two of the more unusual!
