Moving to Spitalfields?
Spitalfields is a relatively small area in the East of London sandwiched between
Liverpool Street in the West and Brick Lane in the East and forming part of the
London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Its location close to The City means it is well
serviced and the nearest Tube station is Liverpool street also offering over ground
trains to a large variety of destinations. Another over ground station will open
soon at Shoreditch High Street adding further convenience. Buses, being so near
a major rail link are numerous however the best way to get to Spitalfields is undoubtedly
on foot.
The name Spitalfields is a contraction of the words ‘hospital fields’ and the original
use of the area was as a large Roman burial ground and as a result the land has
been the subject of considerable archaeological interest with a particularly lively
thrust during the 1990’s . It’s industrial association with the silk industry and
brought housing development of terraced houses mainly during the 17th and 18th centuries
and the setting up of Old Spitalfields market once famed for its fruit and vegetables.
It still remains today but the fruit and vegetables arm of business have moved to
a new site in Leyton to give way for more traditional retail operations on the current
site. The 19th century didn’t treat the area well and in fact at one point it was
considered one of the most dangerous arts of all London and home to all manner of
criminal activity.
Modern Spitalfields saw an influx of Bangladeshi immigrants who promptly established
Brick Lane as their own hiving community, with hordes of specialist shops and many
restaurants. Current regeneration of the whole area has also witnessed the building
of large office blocks , particularly between the market and nearby Bishopgate and
this amounts to what is basically an extension of the City of London out with what
is normally deemed its boundaries. This has not harmed the area at all and if anything
has further enhanced the much needed gentrification process by adding a commercial
angle to the traditionally industrial and residential nature of the neighbourhood.
Conversationalists also had their say though and as a result the market underwent
significant preservation, combined with the provision of a plaza and new retail
and restaurant facilities located in between the commercial tower blocks, both preserving
some tradition and acknowledging a way forward.
If you intend to eat out in Spitalfields, to not go to Brick Lane for a curry would
be an utter crime, so try it ,there are hundreds of options but Cafe Bangla half
way down represents a very decent example whereas Patisserie Valerie ( a West End
name ) in Bishop’s square is Italian class extraordinaire.
A famous Spitalfields resident would be artist Mark Gertler, some of whose art can
be seen in the Tate Modern.
Historical Place of interest: Old Spitalfields Market dating back to the 17th Century.
