Moving to St James?

St James is an area of Central London bounded by Piccadilly to the North and The Mall to the South, forming part of the City Of Westminster. While not actually serviced by a London Underground Station of its own it is easily reached from both Piccadilly Circus and at its western end ,Green Park. It is sliced by one of the main roads( the A4) heading from Embankment through Piccadilly and on the whole of the West End so it is handily located.

St James was once part of the same Royal Park as Green Park and St James’s Park until the land was gifted to Henry Jermyn to develop by King Charles II. It was developed in the shape of a grid centred on St James square and was made up almost entirely of aristocratic residences. Until the 1950’s the area remained a desirable residential enclave in Central London but that soon gave way to a large amount of commercialisation in the form of many corporate offices headquarters, It has some of the highest rents anywhere and also is the location for many of London’s exclusive Gentleman’s clubs.

The area is also well known for being home to a large number of high quality antique dealers, notably the auctioneers Christie’s based in King Street. Art galleries are also prevalent here covering quite a variety of the spectrum, indeed more modern art by the likes of Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst was represented at The Cube in St James before it moved to Hoxton Square.

For the finest tailoring, specifically men’s shirts in London, think Jermyn Street and it’s pleasant air of sartorial elegance is the retail centre at the heart of this neighbourhood having been created by the area’s original developer himself. Several fine shirt makers reside in this street such as Turnbull & Asser and T.M Lewin to name just two of the more well known. Not just famed for shirt makers, Jermyn street is also home to manufacturers of fine hats, colognes and other quality means items like belts and cufflinks. To continue the air of quality albeit a contaminated air, wander round to St James Street itself where you’ll find two of London’s best cigar merchants, Fox’s and further up towards Piccadilly, Davidoff. Remember also, the shopping havens of Piccadilly and Oxford Street are really not far way, if your requirements extend beyond the rather specialist nature of St James itself.

To eat in St James is as you’d expect rather civilised and you’ d be advised to stick with Rowley’s on Jermyn Street itself, the original site of the Walls meat business dating back to 1790, and now an incredibly civilised restaurant.

A notable Royal connected with the area is Queen Anne, born in 1665 at St James’s Palace nearby.

Historical Place of Interest: Her Majesty’s Theatre on nearby Haymarket.
