Moving to St Pancras?
St Pancras is a named used broadly nowadays for an area of London without any real identity or clear boundaries but contained within what is now the London Borough Of Camden. It is easy to reach and is serviced by bus routes and also London Underground at Kings Cross St Pancras one of the main interchanges in all of London offering services all over the area. Kings Cross station also manages large over ground services all over the country. Recently St Pancras International station was opened offering international train services to the Continent including Paris and Brussels.
Originally a Medieval parish which encompassed an area from roughly Oxford Street as far North as Highgate, as mentioned it has lost some of its identity as the central part of the London Borough in which it is now found. St Pancras church located in the southern part of that area was very much the focal point and is considered one of the earliest places of Christian worship in Great Britain. In the 14th Century however the population abandoned that location in favour of one in Kentish Town, probably due to the surrounding area’s susceptibility to flooding ( The River Fleet is nearby ) The church then fell into disrepair despite there being some residence in its immediate area during the 18th Century. The building of the two railway stations during the 19th century then sparked the bulk of residential development in the area although that part of town is more often referred to as Kings Cross.
The old Metropolitan borough of St Pancras having been absorbed into the London Borough of Camden in 1965 only really survives in name of the local Parliamentary constituency which is called Holborn and St Pancras. The area was famous throughout much of history for its cemeteries until the parish bought new land away from the city. These lay largely undisturbed until the construction of the Midland railway and more recently the re development and overhaul of the new St Pancras International Station
Without real identity it is difficult to pinpoint the commercial core of St Pancras however nearby Somers Town a focal point of the old Borough is undergoing significant development nowadays , much of it connected with the Channel Tunnel rail link, but there is a traditional open street market every Friday in nearby Chalton street which is worth visiting. Other than that it’s best to venture further into London for better retail therapy. If you do plan to travel however the newly developed Station at St Pancras has a brand new shopping parade and a selection of nice coffee bars and restaurants adding a touch of class and convenience to this superb new facility.
For eating purposes stay in the station and try chilled out option Cafe du Vin and Carluccios, both excellent and in bright surroundings.
Famous people associated with St Pancras aren’t numerous but Thomas Hardy , who studied architecture locally is one and the old church is said to have links with another literary giant Charles Dickens.
