Moving to Stoke Newington?

Stoke Newington is a mainly residential area within the London Borough of Hackney and located around 5 miles north east of Central London. It roughly borders Dalston to the South and also borders Stamford Hill. Its nearest London Underground station is at Manor House ( Piccadilly Line) although this is roughly one and a half miles away. The town has a railway station of its own however but is serviced by only over ground services in and out of London Liverpool street as part of the Lea Valley lines which run mainly North to South.

Characterised by lots of open space Stoke Newington has played an important role over the years of supplying London with a large proportion of its water supply, both by river and from two large reservoirs. As a town it was only lightly settled over the years and it was not really until the 19th century that parcels of the area were targeted for development largely driven by the relentless encroachment of London itself. Gradually it was engulfed and soon it was no longer a separate village and was being targeted as a site of large houses for London’s Nouveau Riche of that time. As a suburb in late Victorian and Edwardian times it prospered greatly and continued in relative affluence for some time after the second World War, despite being extensively damaged as a result of frequent German bombing campaigns. Post- war development of damaged buildings saw the onset of housing estates with largely mixed results and popularity.

Modern Stoke Newington is now a very much multicultural area with many emerging communities appearing, recent examples being the Polish incomers. Also home to the greatest number of young families the area continues on its path of steady renovation with property generally desirable and in areas such as those around Church Street , very desirable indeed. Church Street is on all levels the heart of the town as it forms the historical base as well as the commercial and retail focus. There is a really comprehensive selection of shops in the area with the emphasis being very much on independently owned than a chain store dominated shopping environment. All the best food and drink is found on this stretch two and the choice and quality is excellent. Try The Fox Reformed on Church Street, it’ a rather elegant wine bar also serving good food or the cleverly named Blue Legume on the same street, a quality vegetarian patisserie. Generally though it’s a thriving centre of activity and there is plenty of choice.

Famous people from the area include darts legend Eric Bristow and singer Leona Lewis.

Historical Place of Interest: Abney Park, the town’s historic park documenting the area’s heritage.
