Moving to Stratford?
Located within the London Borough of Newham and around 5 miles from central London,
Stratford is a residential town with a thriving commercial centre not to mention
the focus of London’s 2012 Olympic Games. Stratford is excellently serviced by public
transport having London Underground presence at Stratford station on the Central
and Jubilee Lines, DLR services to Lewisham via Canary Wharf and a host of over
ground links too including some C2C services and trains to East Anglia. Factor in
the new Stratford International station due to open soon and part of the Stratford
City redevelopment plan and you have a veritable hive of communication. It’s also
easily reached by road and bus.
Stratford’s history dates back to 1135 and it was originally formed of two villages
either side of the River Lea. It wasn’t until 1839 with the arrival of the railways
that Stratford became anything other than open countryside in the county of Essex.
It was home to a notable fruit and vegetable market and a covered street market,
remnants of which still remain in the aisles of the current shopping centre. The
old wholesale market site is now used to house workshops associated with London
Underground’s Jubilee Line.
Much later in 1965, Stratford was absorbed into the entirely new London Borough
of Newham and again the whole face of Stratford is due to change as the hugely ambitious
Stratford City development plan rolls ever forward, with plans to include a vast
shopping centre comparable to Bluewater in Kent, around five thousand new homes
and a host of commercial buildings and public facilities. All this will bring Stratford
up to the level of being one of the most important metropolitan centres in the East
of London, as well as making it capable of handling all the demands of an Olympic
games.
You would be entitled to think then that the existing shopping facilities here are
inadequate and that would not be a fair assessment at all. The existing facilities
are located conveniently close to the station, and while not new by modern standards(
built on an island site in 1965) it offers more than acceptable shopping in a convenient
environment with good small shops mixed with indoor and outdoor market stalls. Close
to the shopping centre is Stratford ‘s Cultural quarter, an area playing host to
a large cinema, a theatre an some trendy and popular bars and restaurants. On a
cultural level also Stratford is home to a campus of the University Of London and
part of The University of East London.
Stratford has a good selection of bars and restaurants, try The Fox bar in the cultural
quarter or to eat head to King Edward VII Brasserie on Broadway, its seemingly very
good.
Famous people from Stratford include Gerard Manley Hopkins the poet and Tony Banks
the Labour politician.
