Moving to Sutton?
Sutton is the main town in the London borough of the same name itself occupying
an area of around forty three square kilometres and occupying one of the southernmost
parts of what is called outer London. Ten miles from Central London it is one of
the major metropolitan areas as identified by the London plan. Although out with
the reach of London Underground services Sutton has three railway stations, the
most important one being Sutton Station which services over ground trains to both
London Victoria and London Bridge among other lesser locations. By road the area
is similarly well connected being linked to the M23 and London Orbital M25 by the
smaller A23. London Bus routes are numerous and air travel fairly accessible at
Gatwick Airport to the south.
The origins of Sutton most likely date back to Saxon times where settlement, albeit
modest, would be centred around the parish church. Significant progress occurred
with the construction of a turnpike road in 1755, creating a link between London
and Brighton and then later in 1847 the railway station opened facilitating a fast
link to London. Development as a residential suburb continued despite some World
War II bombing damage and in 1965 it’s status was enhanced when it became part of
Greater London .
Today Sutton is fairly typical of many town centres in outer London with good shopping,
supermarkets , car parking facilities and some degree of open spaces. The town is
focused around the High Street around which a one-way system operates and within
the centre there are two main shopping centres; Times Square ( 2 levels)e and The
St Nicholas Centre( 3 levels), both offering the usual in chain stores and convenience
style restaurants The High Street itself has some independent shops and also some
bars and restaurants but the two large centres offer probably the best shopping
opportunities. Sutton also has a cinema complex very close to the shopping centres
making the town very compact and rather well serviced.
Eating out in Sutton is subject to quite a variety so have a look around. If you
head to Cheam village just outside town you’ll find El Torito which combines Mexican,
American and Chinese cooking rather effectively and in some quirky surroundings.
Back on Sutton High Street try the Thai Jasmine a rather authentic restaurant offering
the delicate tastes of Thai cooking in relaxed surroundings.
Sutton has its fair share of famous inhabitants, comedian Harry Secombe and singer
Katy Melua pop up most often
Historical Place of Interest: Honeywood, a small museum in nearby Carshalton
