Moving to Tower Hamlets?

Tower Hamlets is the name given to a London Borough to the East of Central London and north of central London. It takes in much of the redeveloped Docklands area and indeed a large proportion of the East End. Additionally it will be one of the five nominated host Boroughs for the 2012 Olympics. Transport within the Borough radiates in an Easterly direction from London with the A13 road, London Underground services are plentiful throughout and on several lines and also there is the DLR. Over ground services pass through the area out of London Fenchurch Street with stops at Bethnal Green among others. All in all it’s a maze of communication, greatly helped by the recent Docklands development which made improved infrastructure something of a necessity.

By 1801, the area now called Tower Hamlets was already one of the most populated areas of London and it continued to increase at a rate of about 20% per annum throughout the 19th Century. This peaked at the end of the century as commuters moved to other areas as population pockets began to appear in parts of Essex, mainly east of the River Lee. 1965 saw the merging of three older Boroughs into the new, current one and with it the use of the historic name which is derived from the ‘Tower Division’ of the county of Middlesex.

The Docklands development however brought population back into the Borough with increasing numbers of new apartments being built to support the affluent workforce created by Canary Wharf, a commercial and modern rival to the City of London. Canary Wharf also brought with it considerable retail development along with restaurants and bars situated in a modern and chic riverside locale.

The Borough is not all about the Docklands however and there are many centres of population which fall into the boundaries, most of them long established East end towns. As a result, the Borough is incredibly diverse, both in terms of surroundings and in terms of culture. The modern high rise technology of the Docklands in stark contrast to old east end places like Mile End and Stepney green.

Within the Borough there is a vast selection of facilities on offer and that will improve as further infrastructure is introduced to cope with the huge demands an international event on the scale of an Olympic Games. Shopping is available at Canary Wharf as mentioned, as well as more locally orientated facilities in pretty well all the centres of population across the Borough.

There are several sources of information regarding the history of the Borough most notably at The Docklands Museum and also at other smaller museums across the Borough such as the Museum Of Childhood in Bethnal Green. Overall a large, complex and extremely diverse part of London but one with a very big part to play in the development of London as a whole.

Historical Place of Interest: Docklands Museum, located on the Isle of Dogs, charting the areas development.
