Moving to Tickenham?

Twickenham is a town in West London and is the main centre in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Bordered in the South East by the River Thames it is a desirable residential area within twenty minutes of Central London. By Rail, Southwest Trains run regular over ground services to London Waterloo from Twickenham railway station. By road it is also easily accessed given its location just south of the A316 which runs through Richmond, passing Twickenham to become the M3. Additionally, London Buses have in the region of ten routes which cater for Twickenham making it very easy to reach by all methods.

Its history as a settlement can be traced back to Pre-Norman times and just a little later it was part of the manor of Isleworth, itself attached to the hundred of Hounslow, according to the Domesday Book. The main activity was farming although fishing and boat repair was also popular given its proximity to the river. After the Plague, real development didn’t really occur until the 19th Century, after the area had become well known for gunpowder manufacture earlier, when the railway station opened and the neighbourhood became considerably more fashionable. In 1926, after electricity and trams arrived, Twickenham became a municipal borough in its own right and finally in 1965 it was absorbed into the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

Twickenham today is a fashionable and still rather expensive district of London, with many desirable houses having been built, the most expensive and largest being close to the River Thames. It is spilt into small areas like St Margaret’s, lying just to the east and being an affluent area homes on tree lined avenues as well as an eclectic range of small shops and cafes. It is also home to Twickenham Studios, one of London’s most important film production companies. In Twickenham proper, there is also a good selection of shops and restaurants designed for convenience centred on a small traditional high street. For a coffee try Arthurs on the Green, a popular haunt on Twickenham green since the 1960’s. For something more substantial in nearby St Margaret’s, head to Brula, a church style restaurant fusing French and contemporary styles and doing it well.

Twickenham’s most famous association however has to be with the game of Rugby and the stadium of the same name, home to England and the sport’s governing body. It has been recently been upgraded to hold 82,000 spectators and is also used for concerts and other events on a large scale. It’s a mightily impressive arena and is second only to Wembley as the UK’s largest sporting venue. Also within it is a museum of Rugby, charting the history of the game.
