Moving to Waltham Forest?
Waltham Forest is a Borough of East London of that name, forming part of what is
termed Outer London, consisting of four main centres of population; Chingford, Leyton,
Leytonstone and Walthamstow. It is located between Epping Forest in the East and
the River Lee in the West and, like four others has been given host status for the
2012 Olympics. It is serviced by two lines of London Underground services with the
Central line having stops at Leyton and Leytonstone whereas the Victoria line has
stations at Walthamstow Central and Blackhorse road. There is also over ground train
services available throughout the borough as well as good road arteries particularly
the main A12 road into Central London.
Evidence of settlement in the area dates back probably to stone- age times with
remains having been found scattered throughout the region as well as traces of Roman
habitation. However it was the Epping Forest Act of 1878 which not only preserved
the forest but also encouraged the establishment of the main areas of population
in the area. The whole region’s proximity to the City of London, only eight miles
meant that these centres became increasingly popular places to live for those keen
to escape the cost and busy life style of London itself. The main centre of the
area both in retail terms and civic capacity is Walthamstow although the other three
centres have their strengths also. All have very adequate town centres designed
to cater for their own residents (Walthamstow has a large modern shopping mall)
and an acceptable level of services. This is all likely to receive a significant
boost as a result of new infrastructure and investment which will surely come as
a result of the Olympic Games and the benefits for this neighbourhood are likely
to be significant
One of the other claims to fame of the Borough is it’s long time association with
Arts and Crafts, in fact William Morris, founder of the movement in Britain is from
the area. Many contemporary artists have been nurtured in this region particularly
in the Leytonstone area. There was a Theatre in the Borough and is demolition sparked
an ongoing and vigorous campaign for reinstatement somewhere else in the locality.
This gives merely an indication of the importance of the arts to this multicultural
Borough.
Restaurants and bars throughout the area are easy to find but one that gets mentioned
is Anatolia, on the High Road in Leyton, an authentic and well priced Greek place.
Another good option and also in Leyton would be Ploythai , a Thai restaurant of
delightful quality.
Famous people from the area are numerous including footballer David Beckham, Alfred
Hitchcock and rock band Iron Maiden.
Historical Place of Interest: The William Morris gallery.
