Moving to Walthamstow?
The main town within the London Borough of Waltham Forest and located six miles
from Central London to the North East, Walthamstow is a busy town in E17 close to
the edge of nearby Epping Forest. Easily accessed by virtue of its two railway stations;
Walthamstow Central offering London Underground services and over ground trains,
and also Walthamstow Queens Road station servicing the Gospel Oak to Barking line,
the town is also fairly close to the A12 and the A406 North Circular roads giving
it great connectivity.
Walthamstow in the 19th Century was basically a very rural area with only a small
village centre servicing several large estates. The route through the area was a
road connecting London and Waltham Abbey and as a result of that and the onset of
the railways, area underwent significant urbanisation along with a lot of speculative
building. By 1894 it was an urban district and twenty years later it became a Borough
of Essex and population continued to increase up until its absorption into its current
London Borough in 1965. Nowadays it is split into a few districts offering different
types of accommodation but the dominant type is Edwardian terraces which can be
seen throughout. World War II caused the area some damage however and as a result
concrete high-rise buildings appeared to replace the existing accommodation.
The town is focused on its traditional High Street which contains Walthamstow Market
dating back to 1895 which still runs to this day. There are a good range of shops
on the street mixing chain stores and independents selling fabrics and household
goods. More recently a modern shopping mall, The Mall Selborne Walk was built offering
lots of chain stores and car parking , and also a Sainsbury’s supermarket can be
found reasonably close by. In all the town has a very acceptable and pleasant retail
centre and there were plans to develop it further however they are currently on
hold.
Restaurants and bars are plentiful and one to definitely try is The Village Kitchen
on Orford Road, a contemporary and popular venue. More lively and no less appealing
is the Windmill Tapas Restaurant on the High Street; great atmosphere, food and
service.
Famous people from the town include late singer Ian Dury and pop band East 17 who
named an album after their home town
