Moving to Wandsworth?
Wandsworth is a town within the London Borough of the same name in South West London,
around 3 miles from the city Centre on the main A3 road. It borders the Boroughs
of Lambeth, Merton, Richmond and Kingston and is technically part of Inner London.
Wandsworth town is serviced by over ground trains into Waterloo and London Victoria.
There are additional stations at Wandsworth Common and Earlsfield stations offering
the same services. By road , and as mentioned the A3 is a direct link to Central
London and the Borough as a whole can access London via several bridges across the
Thames. As you’d expect, bus routes run readily through the neighbourhood.
The town receives its name from the River Wandle which flows nearby and since the
16th Century it has received waves of immigrants from all manner of sources over
the years giving it a distinctly multi cultural heritage. The town is split largely
into a few small sub sections, each offering different feels as well as varied types
of accommodation.
The riverfront has been recently developed and offers a long river walk along towards
Battersea village. Large blocks of modern apartment blocks dominate with a few bars
and restaurants mixed in between. The Waterfront on Battersea Reach is very popular
and offers great views of Chelsea Harbour. The Ship Inn near Wandsworth Bridge is
another popular watering hole and well worth pausing at.
Set back from the River and towards East Hill is Wandsworth Common, where some of
London’s most expensive housing can be found. Bellevue Road is nearby with its numerous
interesting boutiques and the famous restaurant Chez Bruce, where Gordon Ramsay
plied his trade. This area also contains one of the area’s most impressive buildings;
The Royal Victoria Patriotic Building , home to flats, a theatre building and Le
Gothique restaurant.. In contrast, at the base of East hill there are large developments
of council tower blocks.
Wandsworth town centre itself is quite unremarkable and is a busy traffic thoroughfare
due to the location of the A3, but it does have the Southside Shopping Centre which
houses a good range of chain stores and a cinema. Close to the centre is the more
residential Old York Road with some nice terraced houses, pubs and a handful of
shops giving it much more of a village feel.
Wandsworth has a hugely long list of famous residents ranging from Tony Blair who
lived there once to Sophie Dahl the model and Frank Bruno the former boxer. It’s
a truly mixed community in all senses and the centre of the much larger Borough
in which it is located.
