Moving to Whitehall?
Whitehall is in effect an arterial road in Central London, within the City Of Westminster which connects basically Parliament square in the west to Charing Cross further east. This spot, at the South of Trafalgar square at the statue of King Charles I is considered by many to be the absolute centre of London. The road itself is recognised also as being the home of British government and consequently the name Whitehall is often used to cover an area when in reality it is just this road.
The name itself is derived from the vast building the Palace Of Whitehall, for a long time the main residence for Monarchs until almost all of it was destroyed by fire in 1698.Only the banqueting house still remains nowadays and a few smaller parts which have been incorporated into modern Government buildings. The road Whitehall at that time was the main service route for the Palace which covered an enormous area, extending over much of what is now Northumberland Avenue all the way to Downing Street.
Whitehall today covers a distance of approximately 0.6 miles and is reached both by road and London Underground with stations on its edges at Embankment and Charing Cross further north. The Cenotaph, our main War memorial is at the centre of the street and is the site of Remembrance Sunday Commemorations. The central portion of the road is dominated by mainly military buildings such as the Ministry of Defence and with the former Army and Navy headquarters nearby also. Downing Street leads off the south west end and is gated at each end due to its status as home of the Prime Minister and other high ranking Government officials. Police headquarters Scotland Yard were also situated in the area until their relocation to the Victoria Embankment during the latter part of the 19th Century.
Commercialism and Whitehall are words which frankly do not belong in the same sentence, so do not expect to shop here, and in fact do not expect to find anything here other than the buildings already mentioned as these are its lifeblood and to pretend otherwise would be pointless. Fortunately, shopping areas are not far away, about five minutes by underground and in a Northerly direction. Oxford and Regent Streets are no distance away and that applies to all of Central London really.
There is a nice pub however, tucked away and looking a bit out of place halfway up Northumberland Avenue called the Sherlock Homes which is very traditional and a nice place for a pint and there are a couple of chain restaurants a little further up; Prezzo being an example, which are perfectly good.
Famous people associated with Whitehall are numerous; try all of Britain’s war casualties and all our Prime Ministers for example.
