Other popular monuments include Bolton Castle, a quadrangular castle with enormously high walls, built in 1379; and Richmond Castle, one of the finest surviving Norman buildings, which was used as the base of the Non-Combatant Corps – conscientious objectors who refused to fight – in the First World War. Finally, Studley Royal Park is a park developed around the ruins of the Fountains Abbey. The Abbey was founded in 1132 by Benedictine monks; after the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII, it passed to the Proctor family, who built Fountains Hall, a remarkable Elizabethan mansion, from the stones of the Abbey. The Fountains Abbey Mill is the only surviving 12th century Cistercian water mill in Britain. The water garden’s elegant ornamental lakes, canals, temples and cascades provide a succession of dramatic eye-catching vistas that fit their setting perfectly.
