Moving to Nottinghamshire?

The origin of Nottinghamshire’s name sounds like a schoolboy joke. In Anglo-Saxon times, the site that is now Nottingham was part of the Kingdom of Mercia and known as the Place of Caves. When it fell under the rule of a Saxon chieftain named Snot it became known as “Snotingaham”, the homestead of Snot's people; this was later shortened and presumably the people of Nottinghamshire have been trying to forget it ever since…

The area was captured by the Danes in 867 and Nottingham became one of the five Burghs of the Danelaw. Nottingham Castle was constructed in the 11th century on a sandstone outcrop by the River Leen. Robin Hood, the mythical outlaw who lived in Sherwood Forest and stole from the rich to give to the poor, was supposed to have lived at the time of the Crusades. While Richard the Lionheart was fighting in Jerusalem, his brother Prince John tried to take over the country and subjugated the poor in the process. In fact, Prince John holed up in Nottingham Castle and King Richard besieged it on his return.

By the 15th century Nottingham was known for exporting religious sculpture made of alabaster. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, the county became an important centre for the textile industry, in particular manufacturing lace, while coal was extensively mined in the north. However, rapid and poorly planned growth left Nottingham with the reputation of having the worst slums in the British Empire outside India. Residents of these slums rioted in 1831 in protest against the Duke of Newcastle, setting fire to his residence, Nottingham Castle.

Today, Nottingham is a beautiful city with a wealth of architectural styles. Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem, partially built into the cave system beneath Nottingham Castle, is a contender for the title of “England's Oldest Pub” due to its supposed establishment in 1189. St Mary’s Church, widely considered to be the best example of a medieval English cross-shaped church, is reputed to be the site where Robin Hood was arrested. The Lace Market area was once the heart of Britain's Lace industry. Its densely packed streets are full of between red brick warehouses, ornate iron railings and red phone boxes. Wollaton Hall is a Tudor mansion set in a 500-acre deer park, and houses the city’s Natural History Museum. Nottingham Royal Concert Hall and Nottingham Arena, both with room for around 10,000 people, attract the biggest names in music, while the huge number of intimate venues make this one of the best places in the UK for live music.

The other great attraction is of course Sherwood Forest. Sheltered by the Pennines, there is relatively little rainfall and a fairly warm annual mean temperatures of 10°C: not exactly perfect for living outdoors, but doable. Some people camp there, trying to recreate the Robin Hood legend completely – if you don’t fancy that, you can get there easily from Nottingham. It’s a great area for walking, biking, riding and nature watching and there’s also an excellent observatory.
