Moving to Oxfordshire?

For many visitors, Oxfordshire (Oxon) is limited to the dreaming spires of its famous university town. This is unsurprising, given Oxford’s place in the political history of England; there is a wider history, however, and a number of lovely places to visit that have (almost) nothing to do with the frowning intellectuals who have dominated Oxford since the 11th century.

Largely ignored by the Romans, the region was settled only gradually by the Saxons, who chose to farm the wide plains in the centre rather than build towns. It was not until the foundation of St Frideswide’s Nunnery, at the site that would become Oxford, that it began to grow in importance. In the 10th century Oxford became an important military town on the border between Mercia and Wessex and was raided several times by the Danes. In 1096 the University of Oxford was given its official charter, and students flocked to live in private accommodation around the town. The first College to open was University College in 1249; this was followed by Balliol in 1263 and Merton in 1264. Meanwhile, the surrounding area had become a thriving part of the Cotswold wool trade, which brought in vast wealth. This prosperity has continued in varying forms down the centuries, whether due to the agriculture that used to be so important, the Morris Minor plant that took its place in 1912 or the myriad service industries that sprung up in the latter years of the 20th century.

As the most landlocked city in the country, Oxford can get very cold in winter, with temperatures hovering just above 0°C and a vicious wind that lashes the rain against you. The best time to come is between May and October, when you have a good chance that the sun will come out to illuminate the ancient buildings. All the colleges except All Souls are open to visitors at least some if the time: the most beautiful are Christchurch, whose elegant quadrangles, vast Great Hall and exquisite Cathedral seem more suited to a palace; Worcester, almost rustic by comparison with lovely gardens stretching down to a stream; magnificent Magdalen, which has its own Deer Park; and New College, a Disney Castle of a place complete with crenellations. The vast Bodleian library is awe inspiring, in particular round Radcliffe Camera, now used for graduation ceremonies. Christchurch Meadow and Portmeadow are the nicest parks in the city. For a break from the collegiate atmosphere, Jericho is a charming area with cute little pubs dotted around its cottage-lined streets.

UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built for John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough, as a gift from the nation in thanks for his military triumphs. Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh, it is a severe baroque fantasy built in great masses of stones and covered in pillars and porticoes. The interior is remarkable, each room more grand than the last, and the gardens, which were designed by Capability Brown, feature a vast man-made lake with a huge bridge over it. Other notable houses include Broughton Castle, a medieval moated manor house; Rycote chapel, which dates from the 15th century; and Dorchester Abbey, a 12th century abbey in Dorchester-on-Thames.

If you are tired of elegant vistas and curlicued buildings, Oxfordshire has lovely landscapes. For some people, the Cotswolds define the beauties of the English countryside – rolling green hills punctuated by mellow golden villages. The Chilterns are more rugged, popular with walkers.
