Moving to Somerset?

For lots of British people, Somerset is a mythical land of cider-drinking hippies who spend their lives going from one festival to another. For others, it’s the site of King Arthur’s Camelot, or the home of Cheddar, or a bastion of red-faced farmers with funny accents. All this is based on truth, or an approximation of truth, but it’s not really a true picture of one of England’s richest cultures.

People have lived here for a long time: the Mendip Caves were inhabited in Palaeolithic times (bones found at Gough’s Cave have been dates to 12000 B.C.) and the Somerset levels boast the world's oldest known engineered roadway, the Sweet Track, which dates from 3807 BC. There are Iron Age hill forts all over the county. The Romans attacked in A.D. 47 and liked the area enough to build sophisticated towns and dwellings, including a huge spa complex at Bath. After they left in 429, the Britons managed to hold back the Saxons for three hundred years but Somerset was subsumed into Wessex by the 8th century. It became an important Saxon centre; later, under the Normans, much of the land was seized by the crown and used for fortification.

The Industrial Revolution meant the end of Somerset’s cottage industries: in the north of the county several coal mines were opened, while iron ore was mined in the Brendon Hills, but in general the economy remained agricultural. In the Second World War a number of decoy towns were built to protect Bristol and other large towns, mimicking blacked-out streets, airfields and rail lines.

In common with all of south-west England, Somerset has quite a temperate maritime climate, wet with annual mean temperatures of 10°C rising to highs of 23°C in July and August. This makes its seaside towns very popular, from the garish arcades and large Butlins complex at Minehead to the old-fashioned prettiness of nearby Watchet. Kilve beach has wide shale plates and lots of fossils. Exmoor is a vast National Park that stretches across the west of the county; its rugged moorland and wide forests are very appealing to walkers and riders. The Quantock Hills are very popular with hunters; you can also see wild sheep and wild ponies up there.

Bath is a pretty Georgian city, with steep cobbled streets and genteel houses. The Roman Baths there are open to the public and make a fascinating contrast with the elegance of the rest of town. Not far away, Wells is the smallest city in the country and its cathedral is internationally celebrated. From the elaborate gargoyles and carvings of the exterior to the smooth muted interior, it is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in England. Not far away, Cheddar Gorge is the site of some amazing cave paintings: it’s also where cheddar cheese comes from, and you can see the cheese making process at some farms. Wookey Hole is an elaborate cave system with stalactites, stalagmites, and a theme park ride for kids.

These days, Glastonbury is best known for the massive music festival held almost every year in nearby Pilton. It has its knock-on effects: the town, where several leylines are said to converge, is awash with crystal and magic shops. Other places cater to the Arthurian legend – this is said to be the site of Avalon and nearby Cadbury Castle of Camelot. Dunster Castle and Dunster village are also must-see places – there are some excellent sweet shops there to tempt the family!
