Moving to Staffordshire and Staffs?

The name “Staffordshire” is apt to provoke terror in Americans, who instantly associate it with the American Staffordshire Terrier, a breed of dog known for its viciousness. In fact, the county is as friendly as its own breed of dog, the much smaller Staffordshire Bull Terrier which is known affectionately as the “Staffie”.

Although there is evidence of Mesolithic and Neolithic activities in the Peak District, little is known of the county’s history before Saxon times. Stafford was founded on an island in the middle of the marshes of the River Sow and fortified by Alfred the Great’s daughter Ethelfleda. When she became Queen of Mercia in 913, she made the town her new capital and used it as a base to conquer and Christianise the Vikings.

After the Norman Conquest in 1066, the people of Staffordshire focused on farming the land, specialising in sheep farming, which in turn brought a good wool trade. By the 15th century they had turned to mining the rich and plentiful ores that run throughout the county: lead, coal, fluorite, copper, zinc, iron, manganese and silver have all been mined here. The Industrial Revolution brought huge upheaval: by the late 19th century the Black Country, named for the soot that covered the area, was one of the most heavily industrialised regions in the country. Iron foundries, steel mills, textile factories and coking operations all contributed to the county’s wealth, as well as to a level of air pollution that was internationally unrivalled.

Today, the area is a popular holiday destination, attracting rugged tourists who want to walk, climb and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Given that the county is so high – Flash, the highest village in the UK, is 463m above sea level – it is fairly cold and wet. Many people head straight for the Peak District, a stunning moorland area that straddles several counties and was the first British National Park. Paragliding, hill walking, rock climbing, pony trekking, mountain biking and potholing are all popular activities; in addition, you can do water sports such as canoeing, sailing and fishing at some of the area’s reservoirs. Bird watchers and amateur geologists will find plenty to interest them too.

Stafford is home to Stafford Castle, originally built of wood by the Normans in 1070 and rebuilt twice since in stone. The 19th century ruins that remain are best seen at night, when they are illuminated. The Ancient High House is Elizabethan, the largest timber-framed town house in England. Victoria Park is an Edwardian riverside park with paddling pool, bowling green, bird cages, greenhouses and play areas. Nearby Litchfield has a wonderful medieval cathedral – the only one in Europe to have three spires – and the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum. St Chad’s Church dates to the 12th century or earlier, and is richly decorated with carvings on almost every archway and pillar. Outside Litchfield, the National Arboretum Museum is a wonderful place to take the family.

For many people, the most important attraction in Staffordshire has nothing to do with history – or only very little. Built in the grounds of a ruined gothic country house, Alton Towers is the most popular theme park in the country. The best known rides are Nemesis, Europe’s first inverted roller coaster; Oblivion, the world’s first vertical drop roller coaster; Air, the world’s first B&M flying roller coaster; and Rita, Queen of Speed, a roller coaster which goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.2 seconds. Hold on tight!
