Moving to Ipswich?
Ipswich, the county town of Suffolk, is one of the oldest in Britain and has been an important centre of trade since Roman times, when it was home to the upper echoelons of the military garrisoned at nearby Felixstowe. After the invasion of the Saxons, it became the most important stop on the trade route between London and York. By the seventh century the town was known as Gippeswich and was centred on the quay. Around 700 AD Frisian potters from the Netherlands area settled in Ipswich and set up the first large-scale potteries in England since Roman times. In 869 the town fell under Viking rule and the invaders raised large earth ramparts around it in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the Saxons from taking back their land.
King John granted Ipswich a royal charter in 1200 and over the next few centuries the town became very wealthy trading Suffolk cloth with the continent; its fame was cemented when Geoffrey Chaucer satirised the merchants of Ipswich in Canterbury Tales. Its fortunes were augmented by the five large religious houses that were set up: the Marian shrine of Our Lady of Grace became a major pilgrimage destination. In the time of Queen Mary I the Ipswich Martyrs were burnt at the stake for their Protestant beliefs; thereafter the port became a central departure point for emigrants to America. Although the port diminished in importance, like so many others in Britain, the town’s fortunes were again revitalised by the discovery of coprolite, fossilised animal dung, which was mined and used for fertiliser. After extensive bomb damage in the Second World War, the industrial areas of the town were left to decay for some decades. It is now being frantically gentrified in the hopes of creating a viable alternative to London for rich young professionals.
The most famous attraction here is Sutton Hoo, the site of two Anglo-Saxon cemeteries of the sixth century and early seventh century. One of these contained an undisturbed ship burial, believed to be that of King Roeldwald, including a wealth of artefacts of outstanding art-historical and archaeological significance. Helmets, death masks, jewellery, swords, lyres and silverware were all found. Most are now in the British Museum but you can see replicas at the Suffolk Museum. The Museum also has replicas of the Roman Mildenhall Treasure. Christchurch Mansion has a fantastic art collection including many paintings by Constable and Gainsborough, and several rooms preserved in Victorian style. The park around it contains an ancient lion’s head water fountain provided by the Augustinian monks for the poor of the town, memorials to the Ipswich Martyrs and a beautiful arboretum. It’s also very popular with ornithologists: over a hundred species of birds make their home or visit here. In autumn, Ipswich Carnival includes an enormous firework display.
Back to the centre of town for a far more modern sight: the Willis Building, a vast modernist expanse of glass and steel, is one of Norman Foster’s first designs, built in 1974. The Regent Theatre is the largest in East Anglia: the programme is always impressive. Make sure you don’t miss Ip-Art, the annual arts festival. For many people, however, football is the highlight of their stay. Ipswich Town was the starting point for two of the English team’s best-loved managers, Bobby Robson and Alf Ramsay, and their games are always thrilling.
