Moving to Surrey?
Depending on your perspective, Surrey is either a charming county with wonderful facilities or suburban hell. Don’t judge too harshly – while it’s true that there are a number of commuter towns here, several of which bear more resemblance to an idealised fantasy of English life than any reality, the area has a turbulent history, traces of which can still be found today. It has also produced some of Britain’s most admired writers and entertainers, including Lewis Carroll, P.G. Wodehouse, Terry Jones and Bonnie Langford, so it has to be doing something right.
Before Roman times the area was occupied by the Atrebates tribe. In 42 A.D., war broke out between the Catuvellani tribe and King Verica of the Atrebates. The Atrebates were defeated, their capital captured and their lands made subject to the Catuvellauni, whereupon Verica fled to Gaul and appealed for Roman aid. The Atrebates were allies with Rome during their invasion of Britain in 43AD.
From around 480 AD Saxons from the south and Jutes from the east invaded and began to settle in the area. In the 9th century, it was the scene of a number of pitched battles between the Saxons and the Danes and was eventually overrun by the Danes in 1011, five years before the rest of England. After the Norman Conquest, there was a time of relative peace, before Guildford Castle was captured by French troops in 1215. They were routed, but the idea had spread: in 1497 as many as 15,000 Cornish rebels overran the county on their way to London. Since then, Surrey has been left alone, finally allowed to get on with the important business of becoming one of the most affluent parts of Britain.
As part of the Green Belt, Surrey is protected from overdevelopment. Taken with the warm, damp climate, this makes it an ideal place for gardeners. The Royal Horticultural Society has its flagship garden at Wisley, while Claremont Landscape Garden near Esher was made in 1715 and is a wonderful example of the manicured gardens of the period. The natural landscape is stunning too: this is the most wooded county in England and it shows. Box Hill on the North Downs is one of the oldest woods in England, named after the box trees found on its steep southern and western flanks. There are other beauty spots at Frensham Common, heath land with a variety of plant, animal and birdlife plus the Great Pond and Little Pond dating from the Middle Ages; the Devil’s Punch Bowl, a large natural amphitheatre filled with heath land, streams and woodland; and all over the North Downs. The large number of foot paths and bridle ways make this a wonderful place to go walking or riding.
The most interesting town is Guildford, founded by the Saxons. Guildford Castle overlooks the pass through the hills taken by the Pilgrims' Way and was rebuilt by William the Conqueror: the Norman keep still stands. A chamber in the High Street is thought to be the remains of a 12th century synagogue, the oldest remaining in Western Europe. The Guildhall, built in the 1300s, has a wonderful projecting clock that was added on in 1683; and Abbot’s Hospital is one of the finest alms houses in the country. Guildford Cathedral is a post-war cathedral built from bricks made from the clay hill on which it stands.
The villages of Surrey are very pretty: head to Holmsbury St Mary, an unchanged Victorian village; or Hambledon, the home of Oaklands Cottage, a restored 16th century workers cottage. There are a number of stately homes as well, most notably Clandon Park, a Palladian mansion; Hatchlands Park, built in 1758 with Robert Adam interiors and a collection of keyboard instruments; and Polesden Lacy, a Regency villa with extensive grounds.
