Moving to Belfast?

Belfast is the capital of Northern Island and by far the largest area of urban development in Ulster, as well as being a large commercial centre and the seat of devolved Government. Second to Dublin, it is the largest city on the island as a whole. With a history founded largely on manufacturing with rope and ship-building dominating, it has undergone many changes over the years and endured a fairly troubled passage due to the political unrest of the 20th Century.

Being fairly car dependant, Belfast has good road links, the main one being the ten-lane M2 motorway connecting Belfast to Antrim. As well as being a sea port, Belfast also has an international airport and a smaller provincial version. By rail there is a direct rail service to Dublin and an excellent suburban rail system around the city itself. Plans to install a further light rail system were put on hold as it was deemed that Belfast didn’t have the population to support it. There are however excellent bus services by way of consolation.

Belfast expanded very rapidly from being an early market town into a large city, expanding to meet the natural boundary of hills that surround the city. For that reason there aren’t many attached villages and towns on the outskirts that haven’t been absorbed into what we call Belfast now. The style of housing in the city varies enormously through many different eras with the city centre dominated by Edwardian and Victorian facades. The centre of Belfast can broadly be divided into two areas either side of its City Hall, finished in 1906. One area. The Cathedral Quarter is currently undergoing significant development with the plan to make it the cultural and tourist focus of the city as a whole. In March 2008, Victoria Square a massive shopping development opened in the city centre, and with it some heavyweight names in modern retail. Belfast then has great retail facilities, a host of bars and restaurants as well as no shortage of culture, by virtue of its historic past. In order to fully transform all aspects of the city, The Titanic Development; a large renovation of some docklands aims to introduce a retail and residential village as well as a Titanic museum, the whole aim to make the area one of the largest waterfront developments in all of Europe.

Belfast isn’t all about buildings either as there are more than forty parks in the city offering a touch of peace and quiet in this bustling ,cosmopolitan city and was named a contender for RHS Britain in Bloom award.

Another area for which Belfast is famed is for its educational institutions, having two universities; Queen’s Belfast and the University of Ulster. Both are undergoing some campus redevelopment aimed at improving student facilities and also the draw of Belfast as a University city with a famous reputation. Belfast has experienced some troubled times during the political unrest, but as a city it is a very attractive option with great facilities.
