Moving to Bristol?

Bristol, located in the South West of England located around the River Avon. It is the most important cultural and commercial hub in the South West as well as having a large suburban spread, the most populated in this part of the country. It’ prosperity has been linked to the sea since it’s early history and it also has a stretch of coastline on the banks of the River Severn where it enters the huge Bristol Channel. The commercial port was originally in the city centre until being moved to nearby Avonmouth. The Bristol economy has also been associated with Aerospace in recent years, adding to its already thriving economy.

Although Bristol is in the West, don’t think it’s in any way cut off from transport links, quite the opposite actually. The major M4 motorway connects London to the South-West and beyond with Bristol very much part of that artery. The M32 is a spur connecting the M4 directly to Bristol’s city centre. By rail, Bristol is a major stop on the West Coast mainline as well as regular connections with London and numerous other destinations. There is an airport, completing the connectivity, called Bristol International which has seen significant development and expenditure in recent years.

Archaeological finds up to 60,000 years old have been discovered in this area, giving some indication of how long the area has been settled. By the 14th century however Bristol was one of Britain’s most important centres of population behind York and obviously London. It was a port and a centre of manufacturing as well as the starting point for many trans-Atlantic voyages. Later, Bristol experienced extensive bomb damage during the War meaning that regeneration came in the form of modern city centre tower blocks; effective but not particularly easy on the eye. Since the 1980’s, many roads in the centre have been closed to traffic and extensive upgrading of older Georgian and Victorian buildings was undertaken. Also, after the docks were removed to Avonmouth, some redevelopment of that area occurred, greatly improving its appearance. In 1996, the first International Festival of the Sea cemented this area’s cultural importance further.

The main shopping core of the city is Broadmead; incorporating a new development called Cabot Circus, opened in 2008 as well as The Galleries, a three level covered shopping experience housing everything you’d expect from modern retail. Bristol’s historic heart around Bristol Bridge is a very nice place to be however with many bars, restaurants and shops in among all the city’s most attractive buildings.

Another of the city’s draws is arts and culture with particular emphasis on music and film. There are a host of theatres in the city; The Old Vic being the best known as well as other cultural attractions including galleries and museums covering a host of subject matters. Also worth a family visit is Bristol Zoo.

Sport is in the equation too with two league football teams; Rovers and City as well as a keen interest in rugby and cricket too. On the whole a very attractive city, within easy reach of Bath and The Cotswolds as well as London to the East.
