Moving to Cambridge?

Located around 50 miles to the North East of London, Cambridge is a University town of great fame as well as being the main administrative centre of the county of Cambridgeshire. It is also synonymous with high technology and within an area nicknamed ‘Silicon Fen’. The first major development of the area occurred during Roman times when they invaded in around AD 40. Thereafter, the area was occupied by both Saxons and Vikings prior to the Norman Conquest when the town was given its current name due to its proximity to the River Cam. The University didn’t start appearing until the 13th Century when people fled hostile townsfolk in Oxford to set up a rival University in Cambridge. The oldest college; Peterhouse was founded in 1284 and Kings College Chapel was begun in 1440 under the instruction of King Henry VI. The arrival of the railways in 1845 completed the picture and Cambridge was an established University town.

As you’d expect, Cambridge enjoys excellent communication links. The M11 takes one south to London in an hour whereas the A14 offers western travel and a link to the A1 and M1 motorways. By rail, Cambridge enjoys hourly connections to London Kings Cross as well as to other destinations nationwide. Adding to its local infrastructure is a small airport of its own and also the larger option of Stanstead a mere 30 minute journey down the M11

The Cambridge of today is one of the area s largest settlements alongside Peterborough, Norwich and Ipswich. The city centre is primarily dominated by buildings which have a close affiliation with the University whereas the outskirts of the city tend to be mores residential as well as being home to industrial estates connected with high-tech industry. There are some out of town shopping areas scattered around the suburbs as well as a main shopping centre which has been tastefully developed to compliment the distinctly academic nature of the city. The high numbers of students in the City mean that are many bars and restaurants available within the city centre; and there are many nice places to sit and watch the world go by, especially down beside the River Cam.

Cambridge also has plenty to do with a theatres, museums and galleries to visit in conjunction with sporting activities in the area such as Cambridge United FC and quality horseracing just ten minutes along the road in nearby Newmarket, the headquarters of horseracing.

In all it’s a very buoyant and vibrant city with very pleasant suburbs and a traditional town centre completely dominated by one of the country’s oldest universities. Consequently Cambridge gets its fair share of tourist attention and this merely adds to the already pleasant mixture you’ll find here. Added to that, it’s easy to get to.
