Moving to Carlisle?

Located in Cumbria in North West England and ten miles south of the Scottish Border, Carlisle is a large settlement located at the confluence of three rivers. Due to its geographical location it has always been an important trade centre, with particular emphasis on the railway line as a mode of industrial connection. It’s history however dates very much further back, in fact to the Roman period when Carlisle was an important fort in the North of the country, and crucially close to Scotland and nearby Hadrian’s Wall. As a result, Carlisle is a very compact city with a cathedral, castle and an impressive set of semi-intact city walls. In later years, before Scotland and England were allied, Carlisle also held significance as a military outpost and the industrial revolution saw the large part of its growth into a city and many of the city’s fine houses appeared around the early Victorian era.

Given its positioning, Carlisle has always been very accessible from both North and south and as mentioned, the railway has consistently played an important role in the City’s past. By road it is very close to the M6 motorway heading south and the M74 motorway going North to Glasgow and other parts of Scotland. Additionally there is more cross-country link to Edinburgh via the A7 as well as a similar method of reaching Newcastle in the east on the A69. By rail, Carlisle is on the West coast main line with regular services into London Euston from the North, and remains an important rail depot with seven companies based here. Buses are readily available also.

Modern Carlisle is an attractive city with some of the best shopping in the North West of England. Its history as an industrial city largely remains and the town’s main employers being light industries based in industrial estates on the fringes or in sites near the city centre. There are some nice suburbs to Carlisle with Victorian houses being particularly popular and generally it has an affluent feel to it. The main shopping draw is the Lanes Shopping Centre located close to the castle; it’s large and very modern and acts as the principal shopping destination in Cumbria with many high street chains represented along with the usual coffee outlets and restaurants. There are various other shopping areas too, mainly around the market square where numerous narrow streets offer more unique shops and restaurants.

Sport is also important to Carlisle, with football and rugby being the most popular although other sports are available too such as speedway and horseracing of both codes. In all Carlisle is an attractive Northern outpost enjoying excellent communication links with the rest of the country.
