Moving to Chester?

Close to the Welsh border, Chester is a city on the River Dee and the main town in the county of Cheshire. Only granted city status in 1541, Chester was a Roman fort as far back as the year 79. After the Romans left during the 5th century, the Saxons fortified the city against the Danes and gave it its current name. It was one of the last cities to fall to the Normans and is considered one of the finest medieval cities in all of England and the only city walls that are complete. It’s largely Victorian architecture make it a highly desirable town. The Industrial Revolution brought significant development just as it did with many English cities and its status as one of England’s most attractive towns was cemented.

Getting to Chester is not a concern as it is well served with routes of communication; in fact it’s a hub of the area with the M53 and M56 motorways linking the area with Liverpool and Manchester. In addition there are other local roads connecting the city to its surrounding area. By rail Chester, having originally had two train stations; now has just one offering good links to Wales, London and the North West of England.

Nowadays Chester’s business focus is centred on the service industries with a particular emphasis on retail, tourism and financial services, with MBNA Europe the city’s largest employer. The shopping centre of the city is characterised by its unique ‘rows’ which are basically shops split onto two levels and a feature which dates back to medieval times.

The main shopping part of the town is heavily populated by chain –stores and the same would apply to the out of town malls which serve the suburban parts of Chester. The Northgate Development scheme is an ambitious plan to create more shopping streets in the city by demolishing The Forum shopping centre which exists there now as well as the Chester Market. The plan will also incorporate a new arts venue as well as car parking and residential space all designed to make Chester a ‘must see’ destination. Chester is however already an important tourist destination mainly due to its Roman past with remnants of that period still being visible around the city walls and also the amphitheatre just outside the city walls which is undergoing significant archaeological investigation. By far the most important monument however is undoubtedly Chester Castle, close to the River Dee. The area between the city walls and the river are referred to as the Roodee and is the location of Chester Racecourse a fantastic horseracing venue hosting top class events throughout the summer months.

Additionally, Chester has a university of its own and a whole host of museums and theatres making it an important cultural destination in combination to its considerable appeal as a tourist and shopping location, steeped in history.
