Moving to Coventry?

Located in the West Midlands some 95 km North of London, Coventry is notable for being further from the sea than any point in the UK and its historical position at the forefront of the British Motor Industry. It is actually a very old city too, predating some of its neighbours including Birmingham itself. It is likely that Coventry was first settled during the Bronze Period, but much later, around the 14th Century it became synonymous for the cloth industry, largely due to its excellent location. The 18th and 19th century brought more industrial status in the form of watches and clocks before the 20th century heralded the heyday of the motor industry as we know it, booming in the 1960’s and 1970’s. This also has experienced decline and only taxis are currently manufactured now in Coventry.

As you’d expect with its Midlands location, Coventry is highly accessible being close to the M6 and the M1 in addition to many other smaller trunk roads. This part of the country, being close to Birmingham has always been one of the busiest for road users. By rail, Coventry station is served by the West Coast Mainline connecting London to Birmingham, as well as numerous smaller suburban rail links throughout the West Midlands. There is also a small airport located 5 miles south of the city but the nearest major airport is in Birmingham.

The Coventry of today is now undergoing a fair amount of redevelopment, largely to compensate for the loss of important industry over the years which provided most of the city’s economic strength. The core of the city’s focus has been a move way from industry towards a service orientated identity with some research and development bias also. It doesn’t like many other cities have a large suburban area, most of the city being fairly compact, due to the location of the M6 motorway which forms a boundary in the North, basically hindering any expansion. The West Midlands Green Belt surrounds the city on all sides and there are very few neighbouring towns and small villages.

Coventry city centre is home to its modern cathedral, as well as a good sized shopping precinct with all the usual high street stores represented. There are also further, out-of town shopping malls in the Coventry area such as West Orchard’s.

Coventry also has two Universities, a host of museums and galleries; as well as the Warwick Arts Centre and a local theatre. Coventry City FC play championship football at the redeveloped Ricoh Arena and the city is represented enthusiastically in most sporting areas. In all, Coventry is a well located West Midlands city, without the draw of its bigger neighbour Birmingham but with a lot to offer. Its location close to all types of infrastructure make it an increasingly popular business location and the spin-off can only help the development of the city.
