Moving to Derry?
Often called Derry, Derry is a city in Northern Ireland, divided in two by the River
Foyle. The historic walled old town lies on the East bank but the current city we
call Derry now extends to both sides of the river. To aid access there are two bridges
across the river. It is the second largest city in Northern Ireland and its city
walls are some of the most complete around. Derry is one of the oldest continually
inhabited places in Ireland with references dating back to around the 6th century.
It became the first properly planned city in Ireland with four main streets forming
almost a diamond shape, and this shape is preserved in the modern city. During the
17th century upheavals, the city came under prolonged siege, to the extent that
much of it required to be rebuilt in the 18th century and many of the buildings
of that period can still be seen in the city today. Industry historically was based
on the textile industry but as that declined electronics and service industries
became more prominent, all with the backdrop of considerable sectarian unrest over
recent decades.
The local transport network is a mixture of both new and modern roads but generally
they are sufficient to make the city pretty accessible although road and rail links
to other major cities are by modern standards, distinctly below par. The railway
has seen very little investment and there is only one route to Belfast by rail,
which is surprising.
Shopping in Derry is however impressive and would be the best that the North West
of Ireland has to offer. The city centre itself has two main shopping malls with
an excellent mixture of chain stores, complementing further smaller shops in some
of the city’s smaller streets. Waterloo Street is the focal point of much of the
social activity with a great selection of bars and restaurants becoming particularly
busy at the weekends.
There is no doubt also that Derry has a desirable architectural quality which is
lacking in many other Irish cities, and this is largely due to the already mentioned
fact that the early ‘planned’ city has evolved into the modern city with very few
large changes with the exception of the kind of retail focus that you would expect.
Derry is an attractive city but one that has seen more than its share of problems
over the years.
