Moving to Durham?

A cathedral and University city in North East England, Durham is an attracitve town located around 13 miles to the South West of Sunderland, and like its bigger neighbour is close to the River Wear. Its location has always had a historical significance in terms of England’s defence against the Scots. In fact the the true centre of Durham is on a peninsula created by that river, with the cathhedral and market place being located at the base of this peninsula. Archaeological evidence would suggest that there has been settlement here since around 2000 BC, and the present city can be clearly traced back to around 995 AD, when a group of monks from nearby Lindisfarne chose this area of high ground as a place of habitation. Much later, when the Industrial Revolution was transforming many cities, Durham remained largely untouched although it would have some involvement in the textile industry and later again in the coal industry.

The city as you would expect is highly accessible given the close proximity of the A1(M) motorway which passes nearby and also the fact that the city is on the East Coast mainline railway line offering regular services from London to the North. Newcastle airport is around 25 miles to the North and Durham Tees Valley airport is the same distance to the South.

The Durham of today retains much of its Medieval character with many of the old streets off the Market Place still intact, with the Cathedral and Castle very much still the focal points. The University plays a huge role in daily life too with many of the older buildings in the area divided to form student accomodation. The main shopping areas of the City are around North Road and Framwellgate and as you’d expect given the diverse population mix, there is a good variety of chain stores, small shops as well as the usual raft of bars and restaurants. The Market place is very much the centre of town both now and and in years gone by and from here the main residential and shopping streets radiate, sticking reliably to the original streetplan which dates back many centuries. The whole centre of Durham is a conservation area, largely due to the historical significance of its cathedral as well as the University and its many subsidiary buildings which occupy this central part of the city centre.

The outskirts of Durham are pleasant too although don’t have the same medieval feel as the central neighbourhood, mainly due to significant redevelopment in the 1960’s, resulting in some newer and less attractive housing replacing the older types prevolant elsewhere.

Sport is an important part of City life too, with Durham County Cricket Club playing at nearby Chester Le Street, in addition to football and river activities of various kinds taking place on the River Wear. Durham is a highly desirable location which retains its historical roots while nowadays relying on a University to fuel its economy.
