Moving to Edinburgh?

The capital of Scotland and the location of the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh is located in the East of the Country, one hour from Glasgow, its bigger neighbour. Dating back to Bronze Age times, Edinburgh is completely steeped in history, and is the location of one of the residences of our Royal family at Holyrood Palace. Edinburgh’s location is fairly rugged however, completely dominated by the castle and the large chunk of rock it sits on, right in the centre of the city.

Edinburgh, not surprisingly is very well served by communications. By road, it is connected to Glasgow by the M8 motorway as well as being the terminus of the main A1 from the south. By rail, it is a major stop on the East Coast mainline and also offers links to the West and the Highlands of Scotland. Within the city centre, there are current plans to reinstate a tram system serving the centre of the city and linking it to Edinburgh Airport, six miles to the West and an important international air hub.

Broadly speaking, Edinburgh can be split into Old and New. The Old Town, above the city centre and around the castle is all narrow cobbled affairs with nice shops and quaint pubs tucked down alleys. The New Town, located the other side of the main shopping and commercial area is much more residential and is focused on Stockbridge, a small village in itself offering shops, bars and restaurants.

The core of Edinburgh and running the length of the city’s shopping district is Princes Street. Many high street stores and smaller boutiques are represented, as well as hotels and a few offices. One street over is George Street, similar in nature and with an indoor mall; The St James’ Centre at one end. Edinburgh also has out of town facilities at The Gyle, a new creation and Ocean Plaza at nearby and recently upgraded Leith Docks.

Living accommodation in Edinburgh is extremely varied. The centre of the town is mostly older buildings, either divided into flats or remaining as imposing townhouses. Edinburgh has many suburban developments too though, some of them extremely desirable but generally there is a wide choice of both old and new. Many of Edinburgh’s population live in the suburbs, many of which feel like villages in their own right, and not all work in Edinburgh as Glasgow is both nearby and easily accessed b road and rail.

Not just populated by its residents, Edinburgh is a vastly important tourist destination with millions flocking there to visit the castle, Holyrood Palace as well as the annual Edinburgh Festival; a month long performing arts festival taking place every August. Another popular annual event is the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a festival of military pageantry and dress takes place every year under floodlight in the impressive surroundings of Edinburgh Castle, definitely worth seeing!

Truly an attractive city, Edinburgh is incredibly compact, accessible and with every facility you’d expect from a capital city but with a touch more class.
