Moving to Exeter?

Located roughly 37 miles North East of Plymouth and 70 miles South West of Bristol, Exeter is a large town in Devon situated on the River Exe. Granted fair trade status in 2004, tourism is an important part of this University town and it is also one of the ten most profitable locations for a business in the country. Its early history can be traced back to Roman times and it was in fact the most South Westerly settled sites in the UK. Some Roman artefacts remain in the town most notably some Roman baths which underwent excavation in the 1970’s. In the 16th century Exeter began to evolve into an important city, and this was further cemented when it became an important centre for the wool trade and much of Devon at that time was dominated by an involvement with the wool and cloth trade. Victorian times allowed Exeter’s expansion as an industrial town, greatly helped by the availability of power originating from a source of fast-flowing water. The arrival of the railways in 1845 further aided this development and this has been the case since despite large parts of the city experiencing serious World War II bomb damage.

Getting to Exeter is simple despite it’s fairly remote south westerly location. The M5 motorway to Bristol and Birmingham starts here and the M4 is reachable from there too. A more direct route to London is available via the A303 and M3. There are two railway stations offering good connections and finally there is an airport offerings small scale international and national flights.

Modern Exeter is a thriving university town with a centre of nice shopping streets despite the fact that many of the old buildings of interest were damaged during World War II and replaced with far less interesting modern versions. The Princesshay Shopping centre underwent large scale development in 2007 in an area near the High Street, with it were built a large number of attractive residential properties. A little depressingly however, Exeter has been called one of the worst examples of a clone city, meaning that it has a very low number of independent and non-chain stores. The street plan of the city has been altered at various times in order to aid traffic congestion in the city as it can become quite congested.

Exeter’s University adds further variety to the city and the bars and restaurants of this thriving city are a mixture of tourists, locals and a student population too. There is a good selection too as Exeter is considered to have a pretty lively nightlife.

All in all. Exeter suffers from a slight identity crisis in that it has a few beautiful buildings without really being what you’d call a beautiful city. Damage to key buildings during the War is the main reason and insensitive placement of new developments another.
