Moving to Glasgow?

Glasgow is the largest urban development in Scotland and sits in the West of the country along the River Clyde. Home to Glaswegians, it’s a remarkably characterful city having experienced a hugely varied past. The central part of the city as we know it is gathered around the River Clyde itself but the larger conurbation spreads literally miles in all directions, incorporating several large centres of population which are home to many of the city’s commuting workforce.

Due to its location Glasgow soon became an important Trans –Atlantic trade link with the USA and the industrial revolution cemented the city’s role as one of the most important locations for ship-building operations in the country. Ship building on the Clyde still continues today, although the city has grown into a thriving commercial and business centre to compliment its early strength. The city has undergone vast regeneration over the years, including the waterfront bringing it status such as European City of Culture in 1990 among other accolades.

Glasgow is highly accessible too. The M74, which becomes the M6 in England links the city to the South and the M8 motorway gets you too the nation’s capital city Edinburgh to the East, in less than an hour. By train, links are similarly good, with mainline trains on the West Coast mainline frequent, as well as half hourly trains to Edinburgh and beyond. For longer excursions, Glasgow Airport, a ten minute drive from the city centre offers international air travel on a variety of carriers.

Living in Glasgow offers a great range of options. The city itself has seen the development of new riverside apartments as well as more traditional dwellings. The West End offers opulent Georgian and Victorian houses and flats with plenty of open space whereas the East End is on the rise, particularly with trendy conversions replacing some property from the past. Further out there are scores of small suburban districts offering small-town feels but within easy travel of the city centre. The city even has a small underground rail service which makes cross-city travel rather appealing.

Shopping in Glasgow is fabulous and is all within walking distance. The St Enoch centre and the Buchanan Galleries offer indoor options whereas Buchanan and Renfield Streets offer traditional high street stores with a distinctly up-market air. Prince’s Square is a delightful indoor range of designer shops with some nice restaurants to visit while you are there. Glasgow has a vibrant nightlife too with numerous bars, restaurants and clubs in the city centre. Not content with all that, Glasgow throws in a rich cultural heritage, two fiercely competitive football rivals; Celtic and Rangers, and vast leisure opportunities nearby. It truly is ‘Miles Better’!
