Moving to Gloucester?

Lying around 32 miles North East of Bristol, close to the Welsh Border and on the River Severn, Gloucester is the main town in Gloucestershire and has a tradition of involvement with the Aerospace industry. It is sheltered by the Cotswolds to the East while the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills sit to the North and West respectively. It is still a port with its canal connecting it to the Severn Estuary although the city’s primary modern concern is more service industry focused.

Gloucester’s history dates back certainly to Roman times and there is still evidence of some of the existing city walls and artefacts and coins have been found locally too. During the Middle Ages a lot of wool from the nearby Cotswold was exported from the port and the city thrived as a result of this trade. This industry declined however during the Industrial Revolution, having been superseded by the much larger port of Bristol.

In terms of transport infrastructure Gloucester is well served being very close to the M5 motorway which runs just to the East of the city, linking the City with the bulk of the national motorway network. Other local roads such as the A40 link Gloucester to nearby Cheltenham and the A38 will get you to Tewksbury and Bristol. There is a railway station at Gloucester however curious track changes have isolated the town from the Bristol to Birmingham line meaning that most trains arriving in Gloucester have to then reverse.

Gloucester today remains a rather charming city mainly because a large proportion of its Tudor and even Medieval housing remains today, with many constructed from timber. Its cathedral, to the North of the city near the river is celebrated also, having originated by way of an abbey dedicated to St Peter as far back as 678. The focal point of the city today is King’s Square which occupies a site which was once a cattle market and later a bus station. Opened in 1972 it was the impressive centrepiece of a largely redesigned city, and since then some of the more brutalist features of that eras architecture have been ‘softened ‘ somewhat.

Nearby, Kings Walk represents the main shopping centre in the central part of the town with many large department stores as well as a number of popular restaurants also. Additionally, Eastgate Street has an indoor market which was opened in the 1960’s alongside Eastgate shopping centre which was opened ten years later. Gloucester is more than adequately served with retail facilities and is a very pleasant place to walk around courtesy of its interesting mixture of architecture. Additionally Gloucester has a cultural and sporting side with theatres and museums mixing with sports such as Rugby and Cricket locally.
