Moving to Hereford?

Located a mere 16 miles from the Welsh border; Hereford is a cathedral town situated on the River Wye and the largest settlement in the county of Herefordshire. It is thought that the name was derived from the crossing of the river at some point by an army of soldiers. Having been founded in around AD 700, Hereford was a Saxon town and an important one in their area called West Mercia. Much later, Hereford Cathedral was built in around 12th Century from which point the city was an important one in territorial terms , changing hands several times during the English Civil War. It is also home to the oldest inhabited house in the UK, dating back to sometime at the beginning of the 13th Century.

It isn’t too hard to get to either; being linked to the motorway network in the form of the M5 via the M50 trunk road, as well as having good links to neighbouring large towns like Worcester and Gloucester. By rail there are regular rail connections to various locations including London Paddington and other destinations in both Wales and the North West.

Nowadays Hereford is a thriving and attractive county town with a role as a market town for a wider agricultural and rural community, as well as for the manufacture of beer and cider. The town was never particularly industrialised in relation to other towns in the region so the effects of decline were never so severe here. The historical focal point of the city is High Town where there are shops and restaurants within a pedestrianised shopping area.

There are also major plans to redevelop Hereford city centre but some concerns exist as to whether a modern development scheme would sit well with what is basically a medieval walled city. It would seem that there is great need for a blance here as there is no doubt that new facilities are necessary, but hopefully not at the cost of a loss of chracter. If done properly; and it will take up to fifteen years to complete, the plan will restore Hereford to being the primary retail and commercial focal point within the whole region, but it remains to be seen whether developers can find the correct and sympathetic balance between the old and the new.

Hereford, as well as being an important trading town in the area is also home to several colleges with a leaning towards the arts and technology. Not just that there is a keen interest in sport locally with Hereford Town FC representing the city on football spheres in addition to local rugby, cricket and rowing organisations.

In all Hereford is an attrcative regional city with a proud historical past. It’s visual appeal is a major part of it’s attraction and one would hope that moving forward commercially wouldn’t in any way comprimise that benefit.
