Moving to Hull?

Technically Kingston Upon Hull, Hull as we know it is a coastal town on the East coast of Yorkshire at the point where the river Hull meets the Humber Estuary. It has served many purposes; market town, fishing location and military supply port being the most well known. It was also an early theatre of battle during the English Civil war as well as having survived long periods of deprivation at times in its history.

Whaling was Hull’s major industry during the 19th century, peaking just before the First World War, soon to be replaced by deep sea fishing which supported the towns economy until the late 1970’s The Anglo-Icelandic Cod War and the conditions imposed in its aftermath heralded the decline of that industry here and the town has struggled to replace it over recent decades.

Getting to Hull is easy really as the main road into the town is the main M62 motorway, linking the city to the rest of Yorkshire to the West, in addition to the major national motorway system as a whole .The Humber Bridge nearby provides road links into parts of the area south of the Humber Estuary. Being a port, Hull handles major ferry links to major European destinations at Rotterdam and Zeebrugge, and there is a Humberside airport located locally operating only small scale flights. By rail, Hull Paragon Interchange, a new bus and train hub, offers direct services to London among several UK destinations making Hull well logistically connected given its somewhat easterly posting.

The Hull of today is still focused on the port but now only as a major cargo hub, greatly aided by the new rail link already mentioned. In the town itself chemical industries and companies operating in the health-care sector tend to dominate, with help from a faculty of the University of Hull also.

As the biggest town in this Eastern part of Yorkshire, great effort is going into making Hull an attractive retail and commercial destination and indeed large sums of money have and are being invested to facilitate that. Quay Wes, a huge expansion to an existing shopping development is due for completion in 2011, adding a multi-screen cinema and around sixty new retail units. The Humber Quays development overlooking the waterfront has gained considerable status as a location for offices and apartments with a four star hotel development to follow shortly afterwards.

In general Hull is very much on the rise and is benefitting greatly from the huge sums of investment capital being shovelled in its direction.

The Old Town of Hull is experiencing this also with some tasteful renovations complementing the traditional and bringing the whole area up to a high standard. Hull has a cultural interest too with music and theatre at the forefront and their sporting passion has never been higher, courtesy of excellent Rugby League and Hull City FC making into the Premiership with a new stadium to match.

In all a busy, commercially orientated city, with a future secured in commerce due to the foresight of today’s developers.
