Moving to Lancaster?

Situated in the North West of England and the county town of Lancashire, Lancaster is the most Northerly town in the county and is located beside the River Lune with long ties with the British Monarchy. Traditionally a port and a canal site, the city is an ancient settlement whose appearance is dominated by its impressive castle. Its name meaning literally ‘Roman fort on the River Lune’; it first receives mention in the Domesday Book in 1086. It was important in its early history as a market town though and it wasn’t until the 1800’s that it became an important port, coinciding with the construction of many of Lancaster’s fine buildings. It’s time as a vital port was to be short lived however as the River Lune was prone to silting, which gradually made the river inaccessible to the kind of vessels that the port needed to receive. As a result; the city had to find another identity which for a few decades was hard to find.

Getting to Lancaster, given its historical significance as a port, is relatively easy. The M6 motorway passes just to the East of the city thus linking it to the entire national motorway network. The smaller A6 is close at hand too, linking the city to Preston and ultimately Manchester not to mention the North and Kendal etc. By rail, Lancaster is serviced by the West Coast mainline offering trains to London and the rest of the country on a readily available basis. The Lancaster canal still passes through the city and the nearest airport is Blackpool, some 21 miles away.

Lancaster today has found its identity nowadays as a primarily service orientated centre, with some emphasis on manufacturing. In recent years there has been significant development of high technology industry with communications and information technology companies investing in the city.

Despite receiving considerable recent company patronage, Lancaster retains much of its old fashioned appearance, characterised by its traditional market square surrounded by the city’s main civic buildings. Shopping in Lancaster is adequate and the best of it can be found at the indoor market which offers a vast range of stalls as well as two fine restaurants purveying great food at attractive prices. There are more recognised high street names in the town too, much like any other provincial city, but not to the level of some other cities in the area.

Culturally, the main site of interest is the castle which nowadays is used as a court and also as a prison. It dates back to Roman times and at one time was occupied by the Scots, though now it remains the property of The Queen. There is also a theatre in the city and some degree of popular culture interest with music venues and two large cinema complexes. In all Lancaster is a fairly quiet corner of North West England, steeped in history but not really subject to huge commercialisation like some of its bigger Lancashire neighbours.
