Moving to Lichfield?

Situated just 25 kilometres north of Birmingham, Lichfield is a city and civil parish of Staffordshire, notable for its rather unique three-spired cathedral. It remains rather a quaint city, rich with ecclesiastical pedigree and one which experienced considerably less industrialisation than many other cities in the midlands area.

The first authentic mention of Lichfield came during Bede’s history in 669. Much later there is further evidence that a castle existed here during the time of Henry I although the Reformation was to have the most profound effect on the city with the disappearance of much of the pilgrim traffic which it had previously benefitted greatly from. The Eighteenth century brought new prosperity as the City became an important part of the coaching route between the North West and Ireland, but the arrival of the Industrial Revolution would put an end to that status with nearby Birmingham taking over, Lichfield remained largely untouched by industry.

Getting to Lichfield is reasonably easy also by both road and rail; indeed there are two railway stations in the city offering services to Birmingham and the surrounding area and also London Euston which can be reached in a little over an hour. By road there are numerous trunk roads in the area giving easy access to surrounding towns as well as the motorway network as a whole.

Lichfield continues to expand today with new housing schemes planned along with retail development on a large scale. The proposed site at Friarsgate will accommodate retail, residential and commercial features as well as a cinema complex, all in a site close to the railway station. The new development is likely to attract significant economical wealth to the city while at the same time creating many new jobs. As far as an existing economy is concerned, there are a number of light industrial units in Lichfield although you couldn’t say that there was a leaning towards any particular industry. Brewing was important in past years but is much less so nowadays and one of the most famous names in the city is Armitage Shanks; manufacturers of bathrooms. Generally though, Lichfield serves as much more of a residential base for those commuting nearby, especially to Birmingham and doesn’t really have a thriving commercial core of its own.

It is however a charming city with a truly unique cathedral, which attracts many visitors. The new plans to develop the city centre will add a balance of commerciality but not so much that the old fashioned image of the City is threatened.
