Moving to Lisburn?

Meaning literally ‘Fort of the Gamblers’ Lisburn is the third largest city in Northern Ireland, South West of and partly adjoining Belfast. Split between County Antrim and County Down, the river Lagan forming the natural boundary, it officially became a recognised city in its own right in 2002. It is also known as the birthplace of Ireland’s linen industry which was established back in 1698. The original location of the town was on a hill above the River Lagan called Hill Street Estate in addition to a fort located on the North side of this at a place called Wallace Park. Nowadays it forms one of the main locations on what is generally referred to as the Dublin to Belfast corridor. It had well know connections with the Cold War also with a nuclear bunker in the city housing operations and warning team trained in the process of giving the UK a four minute warning in the event of a nuclear strike. The organisation was manned from the 1950’s right through until 1992 when the organisation was stood down, as the threat of such events was deemed obsolete.

Getting to Lisburn given its location is consequently very easy, with easy connection by road to Dublin, Newry and Belfast as well as other smaller locations in the area. There is also a railway station in Lisburn, dating back to 1839 and nowadays regular trains are available between Lisburn and Belfast with a journey time of around 8-10 minutes to Belfast’s Great Victoria Street station. One can get to Dublin, but a change is required, at either Belfast Central or Portadown . Finally, the city has a vast network of bus services, making it all highly accessible.

Despite being close to Belfast and all that it offers from a shopping standpoint, Lisburn is actually quite a popular shopping destination in its own right. The town centre itself has a decent range of both chain and independent stores, mixed with bars and restaurants, whereas the outskirts of the city are home to modern developments such as Sprucefield and Sprucefield Park Centres. Separated by the A1 road, these two large, custom built retail parks service a huge catchment area and are very well stocked with some of the best shopping in Northern Ireland.

The centre of Lisburn itself as well as having a retail identity also has some culture, in the form of an exhibition depicting the history of the Linen Industry at the Market house in the old Market Square. Sport is important to Lisburn too with particular focus on football, basketball and cricket but the Belfast teams would attract more interest for supporters.

Lisburn then is an important feature of Northern Ireland in that it is intrinsic as part of the link between the North and the South. It’s growing steadily and as that happens its boundaries with Belfast will become increasingly hazy, yet due to its roots in the linen industry it still retain an identity all of its own.
