Moving to Newport?

Located roughly midway between Cardiff and Bristol, Newport is a large area of population in Wales and the largest centre of population Monmouthshire. Located on the River Usk, Newport’s history probably dates back to the Bronze Age but the town only really became important as a market town in around 1426 and its proximity to nearby ports such as Bristol meant that the whole area was a thriving metropolis of trade and industry around that time. During the industrial revolution ports like Newport became vital in the supply chain for the coal industry which frankly exploded in Wales at this time. The Dock parts of the town were substantially developed around that time and the 19th and early 20th century was period of great prosperity for the town and as a result there was rapid increase in population. Although industrial decline would follow as a result of the collapse of the coal industry, Newport’s relatively broad industrial base meant that the effects were far less damaging than in some other cities.

Getting to Newport isn’t complicated either and once you are there, getting around is easy. The main M4 motorway is the main route connecting to the East and London and there are numerous other dual-carriageways connecting Newport to both other parts of Wales, and the Midlands. Newport also has a railway station connecting the city to Cardiff and Swansea as well as other more local destinations, giving it rail contact with both the South West as a whole and of course London itself. Newport then is well connected to both the surrounding area and the UK as a whole.

Modern day Newport is still a thriving town now with considerable focus on high-technology industries in recent years, the arrival of electronics giant LG being particularly significant. As part of a large programme of redevelopment, plans exist to expand the existing city centre to take in the east bank of the river with the creation of a variety of commercial and residential projects designed to appeal to the city’s growing population. Friars Walk, a brand new city centre shopping centre will be built as the focal point with the aim to be finished in time for the 2010 Ryder Cup nearby. There is already an adjacent shopping facility called the Kingsway Centre which is comprehensive already but will be further expanded in keeping with the grand scale of other changes to the city centre area. Residentially, the Old Town Dock is the target area for the bulk of the city’s housing plans, with at one end, a new University campus being planned also. In addition to all these plans, there are several other hotel and infrastructure additions being put in place to further enhance the already high-flying reputation of this very up and coming Welsh city.

Newport has a good focus on leisure too with a new leisure and sports facility and stadium being planned on the East bank, designed to host sporting events with rugby being the local favourite. In all a sleeping giant, with significant outside investment giving Newport a significant edge over some of its rivals.
