Moving to Norwich?

A city in East Anglia, Norwich was once the second largest city in England during the 11th Century and was one of the kingdom’s most important centres. It’s the commercial and municipal centre of the larger county of Norfolk and has a large suburban spread nowadays, incorporating several smaller towns on the outskirts including Thorpe St Andrew to the East. It’s history dates back to its status as a thriving town focused on trade in around 1004 AD. The engine of this trade was primarily wool and it’s status at the heart of the textile industry became more established when large scale immigration of Flemish weavers to the area during the 16th century. In fact up until the Industrial Revolution, Norwich vied with Bristol as Britain’s second city, a battle it would ultimately lose. During the early part of the 20th Century, Norwich still had some manufacturing industry including incongruous practices such as aircraft, shoes and chocolate. Bomb damage during World War II was heavy and a large chunk of the Victorian landscape was damaged resulting in parts needing replaced.

Due to its reasonably isolated Eastern location, communications to and from Norwich have been slower to develop than in some other cities but nowadays it is very easily accessed by road and rail services. Its main link to London is via Cambridge by the A11 which in turn reaches London via the M11 motorway. Ipswich, it’s East Anglia neighbour is reached via the A140 and the port of Lowestoft via the A146. Norwich railway station is located to the east of the City Centre and carries regular trains to both London and further afield locations such as Liverpool and Manchester in the North West.

Modern Norwich has moved away from its somewhat industrial heritage towards a much more service based economy with some former industrial locations now converted to act as a more retail orientated environment resulting in Norwich having a reputation as something of an attractive shopping destination. The Mall Norwich is a largely underground shopping environment on the side of a hill designed to sensitively accommodate shopping space within an ancient city centre environment, whereas the Chapelfield Shopping centre built on the site of an old chocolate factory brings ultra-modern retail shopping with restaurants included. All this retail has resulted in Norwich being voted one of the country’s best shopping experiences and other upgrades and expansions are scheduled to strengthen that position.

Other features of this thriving cit are its University ; located on the outskirts of the town, it’s proud sporting heritage with Norwich City FC owned by chef Delia Smith and also its long time involvement with media. It’s an ancient and important English city and one that while developing, still retains much of its original charm.
