Moving to Nottingham?

Located in the Midlands on the River Trent, Nottingham is an important centre of population in England. Steeped in history due to its association with Robin Hood and the lace industry, its focus nowadays is as a location for the headquarters of many notable companies such as Boots the chemist and electricity provider EON. Dating back to Anglo-Saxon times Nottingham was an early lace market before being captured by Danish Vikings in around 867. Much later, much of Nottingham’s prosperity hinged on textiles, with lace again being the favourite. However growth that was both poorly planned and too rapid left the city with appalling slums, the textile output being cheaper to support in India and the Far East. This short boom did leave Nottingham with some historic buildings as landmarks and thankfully many of these have been put to new uses.

Nottingham’s location in the East Midlands give it excellent communication accessibility. The M1 is very close at hand, as are major roads such as the A52 and A46, connecting the city to Derby further West, among other places. Nottingham is served well by rail links too, with the East Midlands mainline offering trains to London. There are numerous other rail links throughout the area also. East Midlands Airport, in nearby Leicestershire, supports several budget airlines with flights to many destinations in Europe.

Modern Nottingham, as well as being an important commercial centre, also receives quite a large number of tourist visitors and the city has plenty to offer them. There are two main shopping centres at the Victoria Centre and the Westfield Broadmarsh, housing every type of retail outlet you’d expect. There is also an interesting network of smaller streets where interesting buildings and shops are hidden away, thus giving the city centre quite an eclectic feel. The old centre of the town is focused around market square however and this is also home to most of the city’s fine architecture too spanning huge eras. There are also, a little away from the true centre, more modern office and apartment buildings, designed to service the new companies located in the city and the staff who are employed there also.

As well as being an important retail and commercial city, Nottingham is also home to two Universities; Nottingham itself and Trent University, as well as concert halls, theatres and a host of other arts venues. Sport is represented too, with Nottingham Forest, twice European Cup Winners in past decades playing at the City Ground on the banks of the River Trent. Across the river, Notts County play and are the oldest football league club in the world having been founded in 1862. In all Nottingham has a lot of great features, is well located and despite a period in decline, is now an important UK city.
